An advantage of writing letters-to-the-edi tor is that I don't have to worry about my mistakes. The Editor always corrects them for me. I like Topix. My comments and letters will have a broad platform. WoW!! Think about it. Now I can receive criticism from anyone or everyone, from anywhere. And maybe a kudo or two now and then. Hey!! Maybe I'll be able to sell some of my “wind” to Gamesa Energy. The day will arrive soon when Barton Chapel Wind, LLC will need all the extra wind they can get. But Jack County will need several wind turbines running at full speed year round (an impossibility) to eliminate the need for its present gas-fired power plant at Joplin. Although eliminating the need is another impossibility, since backup generation is needed for the periods of time the wind doesn't blow. I counted about 66 wind turbines in this picture. It will take 15 times this number of turbines [992 turbines operating at normal, nominal capacity] to furnish the same amount of power as the Joplin plant. The Joplin plant cost around $400 million to build. Who knows what 992 wind turbines will cost, but at the current estimated prices it will far exceed $3 billion dollars. Look at the picture again and try to visualize what 992 turbines would look like. If wind turbines are what Jack County taxpayers want to help buy and pay for, and landowners want turbines to mar up and destroy the countryside, then bring'em all on. But the proper way would be to let the people decide what they want. But, as Al Gore would say, the debate is “closed.” Renewable Energy is being forced on the people. Senator Estes held his 'District Dialogue' Town Hall Meeting in Jack County Monday evening. October 15, 2007. Senator Estes expounded on “renewable energy” in his opening remarks, saying in effect that “wind farms” are needed to lessen U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Same old worn out propaganda. It's never accompanied by any facts, figures or information as to how “renewable energy” (wind) is going to lessen dependence on foreign oil. Less than three percent of U.S. electric power is even generated by petroleum. Wind generates .63 percent of U.S. power. Whoever sold the idea that wind energy would lessen our dependence on foreign oil, now there is a salesman that should be in great demand by anyone with London Bridges for sale. It'll take several more years of building billion dollar Godzilla wind turbines to just eliminate electricity's 3 percent dependence on oil. If Rep. John Dingell, who chairs the Energy and Commerce Committee, gets his way and this wind turbine con game continues to escalate, then electricity consumers will see higher taxes, higher electric bills, rolling blackouts, and of course everyone will get to “share the pain.” (Oct 28, 2007 | post #1)
