Global Warming

The Copenhagen Diagnosis

Satellite and direct measurements now demonstrate that both the Greenland and Antarctic ice-sheets are losing mass and contributing to sea level rise at an increasing rate. Arctic sea-ice has melted far beyond the expectations of climate models. For example, the area of summer sea-ice melt during 2007-2009 was about 40% greater than the average projection from the 2007 IPCC Fourth Assessment Report. Sea level has risen more than 5 centimeters over the past 15 years, about 80% higher than IPCC projections from 2001. Accounting for ice-sheets and glaciers, global sea-level rise may exceed 1 meter by 2100, with a rise of up to 2 meters considered an upper limit by this time. This is much higher than previously projected by the IPCC. Furthermore, beyond 2100, sea level rise of several meters must be expected over the next few centuries. In 2008 carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels were ~40% higher than those in 1990. Even if emissions do not grow beyond today’s levels, within just 20 years the world will have used up the allowable emissions to have a reasonable chance of limiting warming to less than 2 degrees Celsius.  (2 hrs ago | post #1)

Scientist: Leak of climate e-mails appalling

The information requested was either a) commercial data and not CRU's to release or b) data provided by other scientific institutions or researches and not CRU's to release.  (13 hrs ago | post #11)

Scientist: Leak of climate e-mails appalling

The deniers here have been falling over themselves to download a bunch of stolen private emails to look for impropriety in the way scientists have behaved. They all seem to have missed the irony there.  (13 hrs ago | post #10)

if this doesn't scare the hell out of you, you are officially an idiot

It has nothing to do with the "interglacial period we're living in", as the evidence shows. http://www.ncdc.no aa.gov/paleo/ctl/1 0k.html Yet you continue to repeat the lie.  (Sunday | post #5)

It looks like the game's up. Here's one from Jones to Gore: From: Phil Jones To: fatal@vxxxxx.xxx Subject: Fwd: John L. Daly dead Date: Thu Jan 29 14:17:01 2004 Hail Great Leader of our Great Green Cause, Your master plan is working excellently. Soon we control all the use of energy in the world, and then we also control the world. The only ones who can stop us are those pesky climate skeptics, always poking their noses where they dont belong. Shall we start operation "Black Helicopters"? We await your command, oh Magnifienlty Fat One. Ever your obedient lackey, Phil Jones And one from Gore to Jones: From: Al Gore To: jones@vxxxxx.xxx Subject: Orders from the leader Date: Thu Jan 29 14:17:01 1998 You must eliminate the medieval warming period! Use any means you find necessary. Then humanity can be pushed back to use only medieval technology, and Great Cthulu shall rise from his house at R'lyeh and the Deep Ones shall once more rule earth! I believe Trenberth is referring to this statementhttp://am s.allenpress.com/p erlserv/?request=g et-toc&issn=15 20-0477&volume =90&issue=8 &ct=1 When you have two sets of data which are measuring the same thing and they don't match, it's perfectly good science to look for errors in the set of data you know you have measured less confidently. He believes that the warming we measure on the Earth may not fully account for the warming we know is happening from the satellite data: he's asking where the heat is going, and suggesting that "our observing system is inadequate." The Earth is a huge three-dimensional system of three different elements (earth, water, and air), one of which is found in three different states (water vapour, water, ice). Measuring how much heat it contains is not an easy task. Some measurements may miss warming that is occurring: HadCrut, for example, is well known not to measure Arctic warming. If we add up all the measurements of temperature and they don't account for the extra heat that is entering the system, then as Trenberth says, "the data are surely wrong".  (Saturday Nov 21 | post #30)

Climatologists Baffled By No Warming

The 30 year trend is real: it shows warming. Deniers are fooling themselves by looking at a short period where temperatures have not risen, because temperatures in that period jumped a step up from the previous decade. http://i50.tinypic .com/dbpc91.jpg Present temperatures are exactly on the trend line. The present data are entirely consistent with *warming*. If you want to claim no warming, you'll need to show a graph like this is 10 years' time. http://i47.tinypic .com/29mackl.jpg  (Friday Nov 20 | post #20)

No, the trend line is fit only to the *real* data *including* that for the last 10 years. The graph shows that if temperatures do exactly what they have been doing up to the present, we'll see record temperatures again soon, even *without* a super El Nino like that of 1998.  (Friday Nov 20 | post #18)

The data for the last 30 years is real, as is the trend line. I simply pasted in a section from the previous years, to show that the data we have for the last 10 years can easily be part of a continuing trend. To claim cooling, you would need to see a lot of the red temperature line appearing under the trend line (it doesn't). New record temperatures in the HadCrut record within the next 5 years (even without a super El Nino) are more likely than cooling. We'll see who's right ;-)  (Friday Nov 20 | post #17)

They haven't stopped rising: temperatures today are exactly on the 30 year trend line. Don't pay too much attention to the 1998 peak- notice how temperatures after 1998 were much higher than before: temperatures may have plateaued, but the plateau was a step up. Temperatures are on course for new record highs in the next decade. The present "plateau " will then just look like part of a continuing trend upward. http://i48.tinypic .com/28usrb7.jpg  (Thursday Nov 19 | post #5)
