The Morning Call

Musikfest performer Robert Hazard dies

I do hope that his biggest legacy will not be known as "Musikfest " musican. He was much better than that. Had he died on another week, hopefully that small fact would not have even been included.  (5 hrs ago | post #1)

Local cyclists among those who wore masks

The whole Olymics is a scam. Millionair sponsors and millionaire stadiums all to make money. The sport is long gone.  (Wednesday | post #7)

Bishop deserves benefit of the doubt

You guys go at this arguement like the Roman Catholic Church still has some relevance and meaning. The RC has very little relevance in anyone's daily life. Even the members don't practice most of what the RC dictates. The divorce rate in the RCC is about the same as anywhere else (50%), the use of birth control is only slightly lower in reports from the RCC than anyone else. So this gowned and pompous clergy are preaching to themselves and not even doing that very well. Guys, get a life and talk about something that matters. The Paris Hilton story today has more relevance than this story ever did.  (Wednesday | post #204)

Boscov's seeks bankruptcy protection

Boscov's protection is for survival. The vendors that used to produce items for the store and bill on a 30, 60 or even 90 day basis have changed their tactic to billing due in 10 days. Boscov's or most other larger departments stores can't handle that type of cash flow turn around. The items are barely ordered and shipped when the bill is due. Hardly enough time to sell enough to recoup cost. Boscov's had to seek bankruptcy protection to allow for the cash flow turn around. Once they have allowed for that, which should take about one year, they will be fine. Labor costs, shipping costs and a softer economy have all added to the protection. This is a smart and stategic business move on the Boscov's part and does not show any sign of weakness or likelihood of going out of business. Look at the stores they closed. Its the newest ones with the shortest track record and profit marngin.  (Tuesday | post #79)

Man crashes motorcycle into car

It's amazing how much all of you read into the story that doesn't even exist. I bet most of you didn't even bother to read the story before commenting. Sheesh ! The "I bets" and "what ifs" aren't even logical for the most part.  (Monday Aug 4 | post #21)

The Morning Call

Boscov's seeks bankruptcy protection

Boscov's needs to decide if its an upscale department store or want to sell "As Seen on TV" merchandise. I don't think they can confuse the consumers and try to do both.  (Monday Aug 4 | post #33)

It's a rare gem

Hess's and others in downtown Allentown were gems, the mall stores they built and the over heated growth they attempted after being purchased was not. Allentown was not the downfall of Hess's, Crown America did that for you.  (Friday Aug 1 | post #11)

Bishop deserves benefit of the doubt

Don... Once again I have to caution you not to over medicate yourself before responding online. Obviously its the drugs that makes you go off like a rabid groundhog. Phila, Mayor Nutter, the BSA have nothing to do with the letter your wrote or the response. It is classic Donny style to change the subject when confronted with the truth  (Thursday Jul 31 | post #72)

Yeah, I think they mean the settings, but it is funny to see 'antique diamonds'. I guess that is in comparison to 'geniune faux' diamonds. Beyond that, congrats Freeman's. It's tough to stay in business doing anything for 100 years. Way to go  (Thursday Jul 31 | post #5)

Teens charged in illegal immigrant's death

They deserve to be tried like anyone else and convicted if found guilty like anyone else. The murder victim's documentation has absolutely nothing to do with the outcome nor should it with the sentencing.  (Friday Jul 25 | post #72)

City to re-advertise to fill new post of administrator

The Pantos are going to drag this out as long as they can. During this suppossed search it means that Sal is 1) Mayor, 2) President of City Council, 3) Self Appointed acting Administrator and his wife (the current one, not the ex) is 4) on City Council... Why would they want to change a good thing?  (Friday Jul 25 | post #2)

Easton to continue park ban

Former Lincoln Textile factory has plans revived as CVS and bank

The man has thoroughly raped two cities and surrounding communities. He has bought up properties with the 'pie in the sky' ideas and then let vacant building sit or sold to something less. If either Easton or Bethlehem had given all developers the same shot Peck@rhead gets then many of the projects may have been completed. I grew up in Williams Township near him. He operates right on the line of the law (and right on the line, means sometimes on either side of it). He will sue for what he wants until the land owner has no choice but to give in He is a con artist and scammer  (Wednesday Jul 23 | post #3)

The tipping point A 15 PERCENT GRATUITY

And if you do that, make sure it was the waitstaff fault, not management for forcing too many tables on small staff to save money, or poorly prepared food, which has nothing to do with waitstaff. Too oftent the waitstaff takes the brunt of both the front of the houses problems and the back of the houses problems.  (Wednesday Jul 23 | post #78)

The Morning Call

The tipping point A 15 PERCENT GRATUITY

I don't know how you feel that undocumented workers is not part of this issue. I think you would be hard pressed to name many restaurants that have a fully compliant kitchen and bus staff. My point on the wait staff is not so much that many make a 'decent' wage (whatever you feel that is), but that it is dependent on the consumer to subsidize the wage and not dependent on the owner to provide it. During odd times, like snow storms, Musikfest, and other non-restuarant related issues, the tips may well be down, but the work still needs to be done. The fincial burden in this case is on the employee not the owner. As for the tax breaks, correct there are other businesses that get tax breaks, but all need to be totally compliant with Federal, State and local law or in fact, the City and others giving the tax breaks are as guilty as the business for not providing a safe and sustainable working environment. I own a local business. I don't get tax breaks. I do provide all my employees with a decent and sustainable wage (or I don't hire them). Likewise all my employees are documented fully. I only ask that all businesses play by the same rules. My prices reflect that overhead. Restaurants don't.  (Wednesday Jul 23 | post #77)
