Oh My Tech: Recycling old computer the right thing to do

Make sure that you perform a "secure-erase " on the hard drive or utilize a certified, reputable recycler in your area. Simply deleting files or reformatting the hard drive doesn't permanently remove the files. Remnants of the data remain on the drives making the data accessible to identity thieves using readily available recovery software. http://www.earthfr t  (Feb 18, 2013 | post #2)

Increasingly, states push for e-waste recycling

It's sad that more states aren't pushing for landfill bans on ewaste. A problem with the scrap yards is that few, if any, try to repurpose electronics. They're immediately scrapped. Also, these free market scrap yards rarely have the guidelines in place to ensure data security. You're much better off dealing with a certified electronics recycler in your area. http://www.earthfr t  (Feb 18, 2013 | post #2)
