Why Do Atheists Ridicule Christianity?

You are mistaken. To say "there is no god" is unfalsifiable. This is NOT to say that there is a god, just that "there is no god" is not able to be proved false. The same holds true for the other argument: "there is a god". So, the more correct statement is in fact that there is no evidence of the existence of a god(s). I am not sure what you mean in the last part of your comment. I am not afraid to speak scientifically. I certainly do not represent all of science but have every confidence in it. I do not speak for Judaism either, but I have no confidence in any of its claims (or any religion for that matter).  (Sep 27, 2011 | post #3760)

Why Do Atheists Ridicule Christianity?

This statement is the issue many atheists have with some Christians. We are supposed to be able to worship as we please in this country, and to some, this means not worshiping at all. Forcing Christian ideals and policy upon those that do not believe as you do only creates contempt and distrust. Most Christians are not pushers of faith or policy, just as most atheists are not ones to confront others on their beliefs. My family does not believe in any god(s). We have many friends that are Christian, and they know we do not believe. We have a mutual respect for each other and our religion or lack thereof does not play any role. Public institutions in this country are to be devoid of religious policy for this exact reason. We are a multicultural society with many different faiths, including the lack of faith. To pander to one single religion, no matter if it is the majority or not, is a mistake. My family has a long military service history. My Grandfather was a Lt. Colonel in the Marines during WWII. My Father was in the Army as well as my Sister and her husband. My Brother in law has done service in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Cuba. They all served to protect this country and it's Constitution, a Constitution that purposely does not name a god. They are all atheist as well. Being Christian does not give anyone special license to this land.  (Sep 24, 2011 | post #3717)

I distrust all religions equally. I also take offense with you inferring that I found happiness in the events of 9/11.  (Sep 23, 2011 | post #3707)

This continent was colonized on religious freedom. This country was founded on separation from religion. This is from a letter from Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptist Association: "Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State. [Congress thus inhibited from acts respecting religion, and the Executive authorised only to execute their acts, I have refrained from prescribing even those occasional performances of devotion, practiced indeed by the Executive of another nation as the legal head of its church, but subject here, as religious exercises only to the voluntary regulations and discipline of each respective sect.] Adhering to this expression of the supreme will of the nation in behalf of the rights of conscience, I shall see with sincere satisfaction the progress of those sentiments which tend to restore to man all his natural rights, convinced he has no natural right in opposition to his social duties." - Thomas Jefferson Jan 1, 1802 James Madison wrote "Strongly guarded...is the separation between religion and government in the Constitution of the United States."  (Sep 22, 2011 | post #3661)

Very interesting. This is from wiki, but I think it sums it up pretty well: It is still a challenge for scientists and philosophers to define life in unequivocal terms. Defining life is difficult—in part—because life is a process, not a pure substance. Any definition must be sufficiently broad to encompass all life with which we are familiar, and it should be sufficiently general that, with it, scientists would not miss life that may be fundamentally different from life on Earth.  (Sep 20, 2011 | post #3595)

Why Do Atheists Ridicule Christianity?

Well, you have dodged the question I put forth 3 times, so in the interest of what you want to talk about, I will drop it. What denial are you speaking of? I defend what is provable and testable, just the same as you defend your beliefs. I have never "preached " to you either, so I don't know where that claim came from. I have challenged you with questions and I apologize if that is threatening to you. In response to your last statement, no. I do not know if god exists. I do know that there is no proof of a god. What I do know is that the Bible was plagiarized from several much older religions, just as the newer Abrahamic religions borrowed heavily from Christianity. Just out of curiosity, how old do you believe the Earth is?  (Sep 19, 2011 | post #3576)

Why Do Atheists Ridicule Christianity?

A definition certainly is not untouchable, but to alter it in such a fashion as to change its core meaning, to me, would require a new classification. For example, the ability to reproduce is a core necessity for something to be an organism. To remove that requirement would alter the definition to the point that it loses its focus. It becomes too broad at that point and therefor requires a new classification. I am curious where you see intelligence in a chemical or physical reaction.  (Sep 19, 2011 | post #3572)

Why Do Atheists Ridicule Christianity?

My apologies if this is a repost, 1st time around I had a browser error. Pretty broad licence with those definitions, especially organism. The reason I disagree with the classification of Earth or the Universe as an organism is that an organism (by definition) must be capable of reproduction. I also disagree that a chemical or physical reaction is intelligent. This discourse is what makes science great.  (Sep 19, 2011 | post #3570)

Well, you get more flies with honey than vinegar I guess. I know why my question isn't going to be answered, but by not answering, true nature is revealed.  (Sep 19, 2011 | post #3569)
