Democratically elected, yes. Buying their votes, absolutely. He's used everything from subsidized food to free health care, if only the prior administration cared enough to "buy" their votes with essentials like health care, food, and education.  (Jul 23, 2010 | post #34)

The plan is to destabilize, using everything from, propaganda, sabotage, distributing false information, economic warfare, this is the new game, and what better place to have a front row seat, than on the other side of the border.  (Jul 22, 2010 | post #28)

Having a military base on the border of your country from a country that has shown it's eagerness to combat "human rights abuses" and "keeping democracy intact" only when it sees it's interests being eroded, is cause enough for concern. But when that country recognizes coup leaders instead of the democratically elected leaders, you have a serious issue. If invading and toppling a leader was so easy, they'd be doing it more often, but as you can see in Iraq and Afghanistan, the effects of such endeavors cost much more trouble. Can you imagine having a situation like that on this side of the hemisphere. Not to mention these other South American countries not going along with U.S. pressure to isolate Venezuela. It's enough to drive you crazy, :/  (Jul 22, 2010 | post #27)

Chavez Warns of US Military Escalation

In ten years do you see the South American countries getting stronger or weaker, this goes for all the countries. How will Colombia fair in a zone when these countries mature into world class powers. It's to the benefit of Colombia to use it's skills of diplomacy to work out long term issues of trust.  (Jul 22, 2010 | post #9)

2: Venezuela to break with Colombia

That's during the time U.S. oil companies were receiving ridiculous contracts that were robbing the Venezuelan people of their natural resources. It's only during the time Hugo Chavez decided to take PDVSA under it's control, that they needed to defend themselves. When that happened, the U.S. media, government, and anyone with an interest in the oil industry targeted Hugo Chavez. Colombia receives huge amounts of money from the U.S. government, it picked which side it would be on. It's now feeling the effects of a closed border with Venezuela.  (Jul 22, 2010 | post #4)

That would make sense if Venezuela didn't have something the U.S. wanted, but that isn't the case.  (Jul 22, 2010 | post #23)

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez
