Where did Umbrella Man go? - Santa Cruz Sentinel
Shame Robert just doesn't have that "Joe SantaCruz" look, that so many try to have. If only we all looked the same, how nice that would be. We could have a camera-operated trap door in front of the Del Mar. Don't fit the profile? See ya! I guess I'll have to stop telling people "Santa Cruz is a wonderful and tolerant place to live." Pamp, I think she was putting you on. Yes, there was another letter carrier busted -- see my post above (link to article). (May 8, 2008 | post #15)
Where did Umbrella Man go? - Santa Cruz Sentinel
The man on the Megan's Law web site is Robert Russell Steffen and I believe the Santa Cruz Robert is Robert F. Steffen. My, what this human nature article has stirred up! (May 8, 2008 | post #61)
Where did Umbrella Man go? - Santa Cruz Sentinel
I think the article was written to see how many jerks they could bring out of the woodwork. What an eye opener. If all these people really live in Santa Cruz, the town is a lot less tolerant than I ever imagined. It's a pity these losers (not talking about Robert) have nothing better to occupy their attention. Maybe another town would suit them better? Say Crawford, TX? (May 8, 2008 | post #49)

Don't be so smug. Two years ago a mail carrier was arrested on multiple counts of identity theft, grand theft and forgery. If memory serves me right, there were NO FEDERAL CHARGES filed, despite the federal crime. The postmaster stated that a background check was not performed before hiring her (and she had a record of theft). She was a carrier out of the SANTA CRUZ POST OFFICE. Boulder Creek mail carrier arrested for stealing from customers...
This is not the first time a postal carrier has stolen from customers. A few years ago, the Bonny Doon carrier was arrested for identity theft and credit card theft. The post office's defense was that she was a contract carrier and not subject to the post offices background check requirement. (She had a record of theft.) As I recall, the feds (it's a federal crime) decided not to bring charges against her. What the heck is wrong with this picture? (May 8, 2008 | post #15)

You know, I was wondering the same thing. It was dismissed in the article. Do you think it would be better that the deputies dispense the Rx drugs? And are they legally permitted to do that? So many questions ... we at least need some explanation, from the SCCSD. (May 7, 2008 | post #33)

No Gordon, people are just very interested in this case and are curious about who has been arrested. Blame the press release that baited this discussion. I'm sure you have more important things to do if you're in DC ... (May 7, 2008 | post #40)

Sad story. Someone has died. You don't know the facts, so don't judge. There's usually much more to the story than makes the press. Father of the Child - my condolences. I hope things go well for the child. It's a tough enough world. (May 7, 2008 | post #28)

As You See It: May 7, 2008 - Santa Cruz Sentinel
The May 4 Sentinel article said "businesses will have to chip in to cover the estimated $30 million construction cost, or customers will have to pay more to park." So if the businesses only have to pay HALF and we use a liberal estimate of 300 businesses, that would ONLY be $50,000 per business. I don't expect that would be very acceptible to small businesses.
