Many single moms live below poverty line

Yes it would be a slippery slope - no doubt about it. BUT, if the reasoning behind welfare is for the "welfare of our children" then sober parents would be best way to go. Male of female - there are less "accidents " when you are sober.  (May 23, 2011 | post #52)

Hey - don't you think if we could lower the birth rate - that the reduction in welfare would more then pay for the services described? I may be mistaken, but i think that most werfare recepients get medical insurance as part of the "welfare " package.  (May 23, 2011 | post #50)

If you actually read my post I very carefully used the word "parent. " Not all parents who have custody are the mother. My son has custody - and mom is a dead beat parent. But as a stipulation for the "privilege " of receiving welfare, my suggestion is that the parent should take b/c classes. Yes – not all welfare recipient families fit the “unwed” mother mold. Some are grandparents, fathers, siblings, etc., but b/c counseling and drug testing seems like a good start in lowering the birthrate. A good friend advises the students in her high school classes – EVERY SEXUAL PARTNER IS A POTENTIAL PARENT OF YOUR CHILD – SO CHOOSE WISELY. Unfortunately as we know teenagers do not think with their heads on their shoulders.  (May 23, 2011 | post #48)

Also the idea would be to stop the multiple children from multiple partners. I think my sons called the children "community babies - anyone in the community could be the daddy. But in all actuality - the only way to raise the standard of living is to lower the birthrate. Pampers cost.  (May 23, 2011 | post #43)

I'm sure that even 45 year olds have children - my sister did. But if a doctor can certify that the applicant "non-fertile " for what ever reasons, then all they should need is drug testing.  (May 23, 2011 | post #41)

If having children outside of marriage was the only excuse to receive welfare then I would say: All welfare recipients should: be required to attend birth control classes; be on some method of birth control; take regular drug tests. We should not condemn parents (not just women) for using the welfare system to help support their children. I for one have had to seek assistance, food stamps, to feed my children when I was a student at NMSU. My dead beat ex did not provide the child support mandated by the courts. Now, twenty years later, I can proudly say “my education was worth it.” Not all welfare recipients receive willingly, I know that I didn’t, but having food stamps did feed my kids. I would have gladly attend birth control classes, been on some method of birth control, and taken regular drug tests if I didn’t have to receive the hypocritical stares and attitudes from many of the contributors on this forum. One last thought - 14 year old, 15 year olds, 16 year olds do not think with their brains - That is why God invented PARENTS. the PARENTS are suppossed to parent - that does include knowing where your child is.  (May 23, 2011 | post #38)

Family asks for help in finding daughter

You are so on the money..... the last young lady that ran away was subjected to ridicule and scorn on this site. That was why I made my earlier remark about “it’s Friday night,” I wanted to see what the response would be – and you know what – unfortunately my assumption that the race counts in the types of remarks made on this site was right. It's all about the color that colors the responses. There is no way that this young lady could be out getting it on, after all she is a good girl. The other one was going to come home pregnant, drop out of school, get on welfare, etc., etc., etc.  (May 19, 2011 | post #21)

Council mulls additional traffic enforcement cameras

Actually the reason that so many license plates are illegible is that the company who makes them does a terrible job. One of the vehicles that I own has a plate with all the paint coming off. I never touched - scraped it - or abused it in any manner, it is just cheaply made. I also refuse to go purchase a new one when the one I have should last at least 15 - 20 years. Other states do not issue a new plate with each transfer of ownership - and their plates last at least that long.  (May 10, 2011 | post #19)

On another note - We just need to get together and have billboards posted at each end of town announcing the fact that we have illegal speed traps - and only the police get to talk on their cell phones. City council sucks!!!  (May 10, 2011 | post #18)
