Deal for payments to save forests appears near at talks

You mean, other than the disappearing glaciers, the increasing global mean temperatures, the acidification of the oceans which is resulting in the death of coral reefs, a crucial habitat, the increasing intensity of storms, flooding and drought, famine, the expanding range of tropical insects and tropical diseases, the disappearing coastlines....  (1 hr ago | post #10)

Not eliminate it - keep it at a safe level for our survival. There are a lot of things that are necessary for human life, but which, in the wrong amounts, can be dangerous or fatal. Case in point - potassium. Potassium is necessary for proper cardiac functioning; too high a serum level will result in death. Another case in point - oxygen. Too high an oxygen concentrate can cause blindness.  (2 hrs ago | post #8)

Tea Party rallies against health care bill - and roars as Bachm...

The administration would have to turn over a recent Supreme Court decision on the 2nd Amendment to do that - not likely with the current court. This is pure paranoia on your part.  (2 hrs ago | post #140)

Deal for payments to save forests appears near at talks

I guess you did not read the article: "Environmenta l groups have long advocated such a compensation program because forests are efficient absorbers of carbon dioxide, the primary heat-trapping gas linked to global warming. Rain forest destruction, which releases the carbon dioxide stored in trees, is estimated to account for 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions globally. " The point of the agreement is to save forests and other carbon sinks in order to reduce the atmospheric CO2, not, as you seem the think, the other way around.  (2 hrs ago | post #5)

Nonsense. Nuclear nonproliferation and banning cluster bombs and landmines have nothing to do with barring individuals from owning guns. Even if the Democrats wanted to end gun ownership (and they do not), they would not be able to because of the recent Supreme Court decision affirming the individual right to own weapons.  (5 hrs ago | post #126)

Role models

"Nativity scenes have been banned from public places because one or two people were 'offended.' The majority of us said and did nothing. What happened to majority rules? Prayer was taken out of schools because of an atheist. We did nothing." Wrong. Official prayer (not individual prayer) was taken out of public schools because it violated the establishment clause of the First Amendment. Nativity scenes were banned from public spaces because they, too, violated the Constitution. What happened to majority rules? - We have a Constitution which protects the minority from the tyranny of the majority.  (5 hrs ago | post #6)

Despite early snow, warmer-than-average winter predicted for Mi...

Do you honestly think that the weather you experience in your own back yard is indicative of what is going on in the entire world? As for the wobbling of the earth on its axis, that is called the Milankovitch Cycles - the funny thing is, while global mean temperatures are rising (the current decade is one of the warmest on record, globally), the tilt of the earth on its axis would tend to cause cooling, not an increase in temperature. In other words, the current Milankovitch Cycle cannot be blamed for warming.  (22 hrs ago | post #541)

What Al Gore said was that we would reach a tipping point, a point beyond which it would be too late to stop the process. He was not talking specifically about the Andean glaciers.  (22 hrs ago | post #540)

You need to learn a little history. The New Deal greatly reduced unemployment and greatly improved the economy, until Republicans in Congress managed to convince FDR to try to balance the budget. It was the reduction in spending, and the attempt to balance the budget, that stalled the recovery.  (22 hrs ago | post #21)

Creationists in Minneapolis/St. Paul give Darwin new intro

So, you are saying it's fine that 44,000 Americans die every year, from treatable conditions, simply because they lack health insurance. As for cutting funding from Medicare, what will be cut from Medicare is waste - I guess you are in favor of wasteful spending, as long as it isn't spent on poor people and people of color.  (22 hrs ago | post #498)

There is a reason the Roosevelt administration paid artists to beautify buildings during the depression, and it wasn't just because he loved art. Putting anyone to work, including artists, giving them a salary, has a ripple effect - people with incomes pay taxes and they can purchase goods and services, business owners who have customers pay taxes and they also expand their businesses and hire more workers, who then pay taxes and purchase more goods and services. Putting people to work, and paying them, creates more jobs.  (23 hrs ago | post #19)
