Dating Bipolar People - What you should Know

Okay, Julie, I see some valid points in your words, but am offended that you have taken your relationship and applied it to any and every bipolar person that exists. I am sorry that your relationship has been filled with so much sorrow and pain, but how can you blame it all on your fiance being bipolar? It sounds like a wonderful scapegoat for you and makes me wonder if maybe it's you who can't take responsibility for your actions. It's so easy to blame the mentally ill for your shortcomings. I'm not saying that you didn't have some valid points, for a majority of bipolar people, when left untreated, can be extremely difficult to live with. I know because I am bipolar and I have acted in ways that you describe about your fiance, multiple times. However, I HAVE experienced true, unconditional love with a man who died in a motorcycle accident. While we were together, he took the time to educate himself about bipolar disorder, learned my triggers and the signs that I was cycling or about to. The way i see it in what you wrote, is that you have very high expectations for your fiance that he may not be able to reach. Each and every person with bipolar disorder will have different symptoms, will vary in the severity of the disease and will cycle at different rates, depending on whether they are on meds or not. If your fiance is still cycling with very high highs and low lows, he may need a medication change. Just keep in mind that when you post something like you did, you can't factually say that this is how every person with bipolar disorder is going to act.  (Apr 12, 2012 | post #160)

BP need to go in Jail

I am an advocate for mental illness and am also bipolar. I am in the process of writing a book about what it's been like growing up with bipolar disorder. My goal is to educate as many people as I can about bipolar and other mental illness. It's time the stigma is removed and we are seen as regular people with an illness.  (Apr 12, 2012 | post #20)

Bipolar Disorder

BP need to go in Jail

I didn't find the video to be very entertaining, however, there have been moments in my life when I was just like that woman. I am Bipolar and I'm not afraid to tell anyone. Being bipolar does not make us monsters! When left unmedicated and uneducated, a person with bipolar can a danger to themselves or society. But there are so many programs and places people who are suffering can go now to get the help they need. If there were more people who cared enough to guide and help people with bipolar disorder, rather than call us "MONSTERS ", the ignorant, misinformed and uneducated people on the disease may be a little more compassionate. Would you say the same about someone with diabetes? Lock them away from society? Bipolar Disorder is an illness, not a lifestyle choice. Grow up and look for a reason, not blame.  (Apr 12, 2012 | post #19)
