Newport News ends year with $8.2 million to spare

This should read "Put it BACK into the city employees' retirement fund." It may go a little way in getting the employees to believe the council when they claim to actually give a rat's butt about the folks who do the majority of the work in this city.  (Wednesday Oct 8 | post #4)

Obama's poverty programs will not work

FYI... I have 5 kids, and have been able to work AND go to school. No longer a single mom, but I was able to do all that after my divorce. Yes, I had some help...but the purpose of all those programs is to give you a hand up so can make it on your own eventually. Being self sufficient IS possible, you can go to college and have childcare aid, check around. you dont have to be dependant on the government forever.  (Sunday Oct 5 | post #21)

Beware the bully pulpit's slippery slope

OK... one more point. I have seen two kinds of churches, one kind is focused on God, and the money left over after operating costs are removed is put back into the church or used to reach out to the community. The other kind is apparently the churches you are aquainted with, filled with naive people who believe it is OK that there are members of the congregation going hungry, as long as their leader dresses well and drives a sweet BMW. Those second types of churches are yet another reason I no longer attend an organized church... as the first type of congregation is getting harder and harder to find.  (Friday Oct 3 | post #30)

Beware the bully pulpit's slippery slope

Matt- I think you are mistaken in your thought process about Christians' view of life on earth vs. life after death. The Christian bible teaches that for those who are born again, there is new life after death... but it certainly doesn't absolve anyone from responsibility here on earth in this life. On the contrary, it teaches that one day, we will be accountable for all our actions; "So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God." -Romans14:12 The idea that God makes things happen is balanced in Christianity with the knowledge that even though He may control the situation, WE, ourselves, control our own thought process and decisions. I don't believe that God's job is to give me answers or make my life better. I believe the bible can give me some very sound principles and guidelines - but it is MY job to 'do the work', so to speak. All of that said, I do have to agree with you on one major point. Sunday is the most segregated day of the week, all because of churches. I suppose that like any other idea that someone takes one step too far, many Christians are so wrapped up in church going and THEIR idea of what Christianity means to them, they overlook what God intended Christianity to mean for ALL of us, and turn it into an ugly, devisive weapon, that is eventually used to alienate anyone who does not believe exacltly the same as themselves. It is the worst possible outcome for something that was always intended to bring people together - and one of the main reasons I no longer attend an organized church. Nice discussing this with you.... now back to the verbal hair pulling, nail scratching brawl! :)  (Friday Oct 3 | post #29)

Which Candidate would you hire?

The discussion is about work experience, education and reliability.... and the best comment you have is about what they LOOK like (and the tired, idiotic tanning bed mantra)??? Come on. I wish they would institute some kind of IQ requirement for voter registration. I might consider discussing this forum with you if you can bring yourself to comment on something that actually matters in this race. Otherwise, go back to reading your National Enquirer, please.  (Thursday Oct 2 | post #8)

Beware the bully pulpit's slippery slope

Yes, I think I have seen you state that on other forums. I just don't understand why, just because you don't believe in a god, do you feel Christianity should be banned from society? As an example- I don't share your beliefs regarding sexual preference, but I think it would be silly and presumptuous of me to wish it banned from society. Again, not trying to be an idiot about this... just genuinely curious about why, if you don't even believe in a god, you are so adamant about religion for others.  (Thursday Oct 2 | post #23)

Beware the bully pulpit's slippery slope

Just out of curiosity, why?? I know there are things we have disagreed on in other forums, but you still strike me as a 'live and let live' sort of guy. So... why so "fierce" about this point?  (Thursday Oct 2 | post #11)

Which Candidate would you hire?

Obama/Biden work history and education may look good on paper, but as a potential employer, I have to consider that that is the part of the application process they would fill in for themself. If you want the TRUE picture of what a person is, you gotta go with the interview, work experience and personal references. So, in a more realistic application process, I'd still have to go with McCain/Palin.  (Thursday Oct 2 | post #4)

Obama's brainwashed choir

That is easily the most nauseating clip I have seen this entire election season! Kids that age should be in school, learning about the election process and basic lessons about how the government works. Instead, Obama and his nut job supporters are brainwashing and exploiting 10 year olds for political gain. And this guy is the "savior" of the democratic party??? What does that make Hillary?? "Mother Theresa"? (my apologies to the REAL Mother Theresa!) The above poster is right. Watching this made me sick to my stomach. I cannot believe more people aren't seeing the similarities between this man and Nazi Germany or Korea. Scary.  (Thursday Oct 2 | post #6)

Obama's brainwashed choir

Sounds disgusting... but I'm a "don't believe it till I see it" kind of person. Anybody have a link to this?  (Thursday Oct 2 | post #2)

3 former Fannie Mae executives who have brought down Wall Street.

Awwww, C'mon, guys! You can't make them use facts and (gasp) TRUTH?!?! Thats no fun! How will the libs be able to comment then? It's no fun for them when they have to play fair! sigh... you're so mean!  (Tuesday Sep 30 | post #13)

Black Caucus and the Bailout

I believe the CBC's attitude is fair, to an extent. I think the Execs that have been riding the money train all these years and slipping huge amounts of money to their cronies in Washington should be stripped of whatever they own first, to offset this mess. They helped it get this way, so they should be the first to suffer (not get million dollar severance packages). On another note.... I still feel it was wrong for the banks to be forced politically to make loans to people who knew they could not pay them back... thats why we have credit reporting and qualifying conditions for borrowing money. I feel bad for families that may lose their homes, but if they shouldn't have taken the loan in the first place, its hard to feel too bad. There doesn't seem to be a way to seperate things... so I agree with the CBC; there should be some kind of foreclosure protection - but it should be temporary, possibly a way to roll whats behind onto the back side of the loan? (I dont know... dont have a mortgage yet.) Maybe there is someone who knows more about the market than I that could shed some light on what is and isn't possible.  (Tuesday Sep 30 | post #9)

Palin's career

Kinda hard to dispute, seeing as the idea started with the Clinton Administration, and you have the words coming out of several horses' mouths.  (Tuesday Sep 30 | post #186)

Black Caucus and the Bailout

Very, very interesting article. I can't wait to hear what our resident Obama supporters have to say about the points she made. I have been looking, and I have yet to find any information about Obama making any attempt in his time in office to head this off.  (Tuesday Sep 30 | post #2)
