Herkimer ranked 5th most dangerous NYS town

Read the study. The shooting last year did not figure into the results. Their data came from the 2012 FBI crime stats, not 2013. The criteria were violent crime, property crime, and your chance of being a crime victim. As far as it being skewed against Herkimer because it is a small town, nonsense. Elmira (pop slightly less than 7,000) was deemed the safest. In fact, the top 10 is dominated by small towns. If anything, their methodology favors making them look safer than they are. People need to wake up. It is fine to love your town despite its warts. However, putting your collective heads in the sand and denying reality is why the town became a dump. This is not 1980 Herkimer. Even "behind the hospital" is not nearly as nice as it was 30 years ago.  (Jan 17, 2014 | post #19)

Late Great Businesses of Herkimer's Past

Herkimer County Sports Center (originally at the pool place on Caroline Street and then later on State Street where Jim Dodd Insurance later went. There was also a guy who sold guns out of his house on Francis Street who was an old DEC officer. I think his name was Matty, or something like that.  (Aug 9, 2010 | post #324)

Sorry try again... You are obviously an employee of the CM going through old volunteer records and trying to piece things together. Why else would you have such an emotional involvement. Again, if you want to tell me EXACTLY whose privacy I violated, go for it...  (Apr 14, 2010 | post #29)

Is John Piseck a horse's ass?

Typical of the valley. Let's complain about what everyone else is doing "wrong" and then sit back in our laziness and do NOTHING about it except complain on Topix. Join a Tea Party. If you are a leftist, create a similar movement. Even though Progressivism is an evil movement that hates the constitution and the rule of law, imprisoned tens of thousands for exercising free speech (Woodrow Wilson to opponents of WWI), placed American citizens in concentration camps (FDR-Japanese/Amer icans), brought us eugenics (Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood among them), flirted with Hitler and Mussolini in the 1920's and 30's, at least joining/creating such a group shows involvement. Then an approach to the American Republic can be debated with an informed populace. That is much more useful and courageous than backbench sniping.  (Apr 11, 2010 | post #20)

Then you, my friend, are an ignorant and foolish child. First, patient confidentiality is defined as, "Confidential ity is the right of an individual to have personal, identifiable medical information kept private. Such information should be available only to the physician of record and other health care and insurance personnel as necessary. As of 2003, patient confidentiality was protected by federal statute. http://www.health. state.ny.us/nysdoh /ems/pdf/08-02.pdf So, please provide an exact quote where I broke any resident's confidentiality or be an honorable person and retract the claim. I have not even mentioned a single resident's NAME. As far as their "personal lives," again, please provide a quote where I discussed a resident's personal life or be an honorable person and retract the claim.  (Apr 10, 2010 | post #27)

OK, I'll deal with the idiocy in order: What Does it Take... Your post does not even make sense and appears to have been written by a teenager. Amazing Grace... When "what goes on" in these families compels others to pay for it, yes, it is their business. The problem with the CM is that it originally was built to house only the indigent with no families. The cemetery across the street is evidence of that. Unfortunately, it scrapped that mission throughout the years and became a place that selfish children sent their parents. It is not a statement against the residents, just their kids. The facility is not really being sold for a dollar; the county is paying VHS to take it. As far as how it is being sold, that is a legitmate gripe. Does anyone expect the Herkimer County Legislature to do anything on the up and up? I sure hope not. All incumbents should be voted out. Both parties, local, county, state, and national. However, that does NOT change that the result is the correct one. County Resident... Let me see. Are you implying that NO PERSON who ever worked or volunteered at the CM can ever talk about the residents, even in general terms? That it is part of "patient confidentiality? " (They are not "patients, " by the way). The wonderful man who used to bring his horse to the facility (he still may for all I know) can NEVER speak of it for fear of imprisonment, fine, or death? Those that came to do bingo? Bring residents to church? Are you serious?  (Apr 8, 2010 | post #25)

You start right off with a strawman fallacy? Nice try. I never stated they made "big bucks." What I did say is that the workers there have fewer skills and make more money and have better benefits(at taxpayers' expense) than their private sector counterparts. The county/state/count ry is falling apart largely because of public sector unions bleeding the people dry. No more free rides for them. And do not feel sorry for me for not belonging to a union. I moved south, make more money than I did in CNY, have lower utility bills, no idiotic fees, bought more house for the same money, and pay $1200 in property taxes instead of $6000. I really took it on the chin, eh? As far as the diatribe regarding the residents... I never said one negative word against them, which is what you imply during the entire tantrum. Another fallacy, by the way, intended to stifle debate by screaming, "He hates the elderly!" with no evidence to back it up, so you make it up. The rest is half-truths at best. A very small group there may not have family, that is true. They will easily absorbed by the other facilities in the area. Most do have family though. I volunteered there years ago and know it for a fact. They just do not visit or care until they hear (incorrectly) that their family may be thrown into the streets and panic because heaven forbid they may have to be bothered. Your "consent " argument is a silly aside. OF COURSE they "consented " to go there when no family members were willing to take them in. It comes down to family being too self-absorbed to do what is correct for their elderly relatives. And you are correct (finally) in saying that it is an assisted living facility, which is different than a nursing home. It is UNSKILLED care. In other words, these people can can do most of the functions themselves but probably should not cook or may need help with hygiene. Things any son or daughter could do with a little sacrifice. And therein lies the problem. They sacrificed for their children and their children said, "Sorry, I'm too busy." Your final statement is the best. Essentially, you are advocating keeping the SAME people running a facility that you admit has been mismanaged. That is some great "logic" you are showing...  (Apr 8, 2010 | post #21)

Country Manor

Finally, a responsible move by the legislature. Herkimer County is in a death spiral along with the entire state. It is time people woke up and realized that $6000+ is a ridiculous amount to pay in property taxes in addition to all of the other ones making NY one of the most taxed states. That means cutting services, employees, etc. Screw the unions because they have screwed the taxpayers long enough.  (Apr 8, 2010 | post #7)

People who want to keep the Country Manor Open: 1) Employees (union members) who want to keep their cushy jobs and benefits. They get paid more and have better benefits than actual CNA's at VHS or hospitals, even though you do not have to be certified to work at the UNSKILLED nursing home. Sorry if the gravy train is over. 2) Families who may have to actually do something for their relatives. CM is NOT a skilled nursing home facility. In other words, to live there, one must be somewhat mobile, continent, and have their faculties. The people there are not suffering from late stage Alzheimers or severe dementia. In other words, these complainers are worrying about the COUNTY throwing their relatives to the streets (which is not going to happen anyway)even though it is exactly what THEY DID to their "loved ones." What about taking the "loved one" in instead of pawning it off on the county government and making the taxpayers pay for it? Nah, you should not have to be "inconvenienc ed" by the parent that raised you just like you should not have to be "inconvenienc ed" by a baby (oops, "fetus") that you took your pants off to make. The idiots complaining about getting out from underneath this money-eating facility are probably the same ones complaining that our taxes, fees, etc. are too high. They are too stupid to even see a connection. What about connecting with reality and realizing that nothing is free?  (Apr 8, 2010 | post #17)
