Who is our new senator?

True, crminals will do anything to violate the law and they can not pass a license permiting process. So they do generally buy them illegally. The more you force activity into the underground the more hidden it will be. Then the most devious will have them and since they are unregistered will not think 2x about using them. Do not let false security comfort you. If everyone who could qualify had a open carry permit and a pistol on their hip many crimes would not happen, the perp would know that he might get one or two shots off and be facing qualified law abiding citizens willing to help. I dont own any handguns but it does not scare me that citizens should have the right to.  (Apr 18, 2009 | post #4)

MLK Breakfast speaker: Obama shows 'Being smart is Cool'

I just hope he understand economics or finds a staff memeber who does. I know other members who are excited about "all the things hes doing for us" however you must understand that WE are all going to pay it back, and that with our export business likely to decline further that prospect is dim. If we can not support the private sector with lower costs, controll our own enforcement of policy and take a more forgiving and caring roll towards those who are employing our people the jobs will continue to go elsewhere - at least out of NY. My job is just about guaranteed but for those who have to produce a product they are always under fire. Sooner or later we all must cut our costs, cut budgets, and increase the measurements that make our country possible. China will grow and it will take a larger share of our dollars and unless we can compete through exportation all the best intentions of all the kings men will not matter. We know they are trying but every action has a reaction, sometimes you have to stay put and think about "what if I do this and that and then .... oh ... maybe 20 people will loose their jobs here and then there and then because those costs went up they will cut back there and etc...." You can not just expect that if a legislation is created, there will be no reaction. Look at the Black Liquor and Alternative Fuels tax credit that was driving the paper industry - they get a .50 cent credit/ gal when they mix Diesel Fuel with Black Liquor (a sap like byproduct of paper manufacture that can burn) to make heat to run the paper process. Now they have become accustomed to this method, they have hired additional people to manage it, and it lowered the cost of paper production, and helped them make more profit which they purchased equuipment and paid more tax dollars on. You see dollars pay the bills, not percents. Corporations may pay 33% in tax rate on income, then their people pay their income taxes, then the other businesses they do business with pay their income taxes. But, if a business does not make money it does not pay income taxes. You see we are all in this together.  (Apr 18, 2009 | post #3)

Job sprawl worsens in upstate cities

The costs of living in NY are getting too high. Everyone, including Gov employees need to realize that every action they take will have an adverse effect on their own costs of living over time. We all add to the economy in some way, but it is either a debit of a credit. Creating is important, but costing such as unnecessary activities, enforcements, waste, and anything that has a administrative cost tied to it is very bad for ALL of us. I speak to my coworkers all the time about it, some feel they are trying to protect themselves by proving something to their boss, I try to remind them that the more they go out of their way to create an issue the more it is costing our department - sometimes nothing is better than a perceived win. The people of NY need to cut costs so we can all contribute to the economy where it counts - economically. Then tax revenue actually rises while costs can go down and that means more for all of us. Maybe NY can be a more desirable place to live with lower overall tax rates than most other states? Maybe NY can leverage its massive economies of scale. We can only hope.  (Apr 18, 2009 | post #2)

Dutchess County Arts Council Art in the Loft at Millbrook...

Very nice. It is so important to support the arts, In these difficult times we all need to get out and see the world instead of being cooped up and surrounded with negativity.  (Apr 18, 2009 | post #2)
