The Wimp Who Stole Christmas (Parking)

with apologies to Dr. Suess Every Dot down in Poca liked Christmas a lot... But Mayor Wimpy and the Town Council, Did NOT! The Wimp hated Christmas! I guess the whole Winter season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be that someone's double-wide doulie was much too double wide - They shrieked they couldn't get by, a lie that facts can only deride. But I think the most likely reason, after considering the whole, May have been that a snow-plow the Wimp cannot control. - A parked car he almost struck, the Wimp angrily complained! As if to blame a parked vehicle doesn't sound the least bit insane. Whatever the reason, Too-Double-Wide Doulies or lack of driving smarts He stood there on Poca Main Street, just hating the Dots. Staring out from his metal town hall he lost all bodily functions, Thinking about cars parked in historically safe, large, Poca Dot junctions. He knew every Dot would have visiting friends and family come round Just as they'd done for 40 years and celebrate Christmas in the town. "I don't mind some, but others must STOP! STOP! STOP!" he croaked like a toad, "They fill up their driveways then they'll park in the wide road!" Then he growled, with his Wimp fingers nervously drumming, "I MUST find some way to stop Christmas from coming!" "I don't care that they've parked there for 40 years of functions! I don't care that they've never had an accident at the large Poca Dot Junctions! All I care for is making my Mayor mark, bold and colorful it shall be! I'll post red Stop Signs everywhere and unsightly yellow curbs for all to see!" "They'll be sorry they made me mayor, but fun times must now end. No parking for extra family and no parking for your friend! Is your driveway is too tiny? Boo Hoo! Go empty your Poca bank! Pay for big cement trucks after pulling up yards with a yank!" I actually wish Mayor Wimp(y) a very Merry Christmas - and this time I'm not mocking. I hope he finds lots of Christmas cheer in his oversized Poca Dot Christmas stocking. Perhaps his heart will grow three sizes, but perhaps it doesn't need to. Maybe all he needs is time to reflect on what's important, wise and true. Poca Dots may not be rich in funds but we are with friends who are dear. We all like for them to visit at Christmas and occasionally throughout the year YES! It's great for Poca business -- let us park and do it with speed! Lest we meet elsewhere and buy less food (locally) with fewer mouths to feed. Poca is not a dump. It's a nice town. Yeah, it's former farm land with some nice homes on it and good neighbors... most of the time. We just need to get the Town Council to stop trying to fix what isn't broken.  (Oct 20, 2015 | post #4)

Intersection Safety: Myth Verses Reality - US DEPT of TRA...

from the US Dept of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. https://www.dot.st ate.oh.us/district s/D01/PlanningProg rams/trafficstudie s/Documents/Inters ection-Safety-myth -versus-reality.pd f Myth 1: Installing signals always makes intersections safer. Reality: The installation of unwarranted signals, or signals that operate improperly, can create situations where overall intersection congestion is increased, which in turn can create aggressive driving behavior. Myth 2: Having a stop sign is always better than no stop sign, OR, more stop signs are always safer than fewer stop signs. Reality: There is no evidence to indicate that stop signs decrease the overall speed of traffic. Impatient drivers view the additional delay caused by unwarranted stop signs as “lost time” to be made up by driving at higher speeds between stop signs. Unwarranted stop signs breed contempt in motorists who tend to ignore them or only slow down without stopping. This can sometimes lead to tragic consequences. Stop signs should never be installed as a routine, cure-all approach to curtail speeding, prevent collisions at intersections, or discourage traffic from entering a neighborhood. Stop signs should be installed only after an engineering study determines that there is a need. Stop signs are not a solution to intersection safety problems caused by poor sight distances and deficient road design. Myth 3: Installing stop signs on all approaches (four-way stop) to an intersection will always result in fewer accidents. Reality: Four-way stop signs do not necessarily improve pedestrian or vehicle safety. In fact, pedestrians in stop sign-congested neighborhoods often have a false sense of security about crossing local streets with four-way stop signs. The application of traffic control devices, to the casual observer, often creates this sense of security, but in reality may actually increase safety risk. If control devices are improperly applied, they can create confusion between the pedestrians and the driver as to who has the right-of-way, thereby increasing the risk that one of the two will make an improper decision resulting in serious consequences. Placing four-way stop signs on roads of very unequal design, speed and traffic volume will tend to promote stop-sign violations by drivers, especially on main roads. Driver expectancies are violated in situations like this and when this occurs, improper actions result which can increase safety risk at intersections. Placing four-way stop signs at every intersection where there were formerly only two-way stop signs also usually increases congestion. Four-way stop signs should only be considered after an engineering study and a capacity analysis are performed. ================== ============ No engineering studies were done before making these changes. In fact, in the haphazard why they are being put up we can’t imagine anything but these ‘safety measures’ are being made up as you go along. First, the stop sign was installed overnight and facing down Corey Drive. Later it was turned to face up Janette Drive – a straight away. When confronted with the fact that stop signs should actually be at an the intersection, I was told the stop sign was being moved to the top of Corey Drive. Later, we were told stop signs would be placed at each intersection. This is why Engineering studies are required before intersections are changed. This is chaos and this is how accidents happen. Not to mention people are flying thru the stop signs at speeds above the posted 15mph, and he does nothing. He just easily tickets people peacefully parked in front of their homes (as they have for 4 decades).  (Oct 20, 2015 | post #2)

No Parking Zones?

I just found out I can only meet with the Town Council on Oct 12th and/or the end of October for the "Court" - that is if they don't reschedule like they did the last court date in September. I called and politely asked for special permission for a few friends to park in front of my house (as they have for 8 years every Friday) - but was denied permission. What they want me to do instead is to have friends park where there is not yellow curb - where the road NARROWS and WOULD inconvenience neighbors and emergency vehicles. !? This is really infuriating and sad that my town has been infected with people on the town council who, because they were given a little power, want to turn this into some sort of homeowners association - but follow THEIR idea of rules. I explained that for 8 years we've been having friends over. We often meet at Ginos and they sometimes pick up things at the Grocery store... so in effect, they are hurting the economy of Poca with this arbitrary and immovable rule.  (Oct 2, 2015 | post #2)

Legislators Usher in a New Age of WV Wealth and Prosperity

CHARLESTON- In his 2014 State of the Union Address President Obama asked businesses across the country to "Give America a Raise". Eager to prove that government is best used as a blunt weapon, the WV Legislature quickly removed that choice from businesses and quickly voted to raise the state minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.75 by 2016. more... http://thediggerer .com/component/k2/ item/383-legislato rs-usher-in-a-new- age-of-wv-wealth-a nd-prosperity  (Feb 12, 2014 | post #1)

New Huntington Fees Going Down the Toilet

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – After a firestorm of citizen opposition to the proposed storm water maintenance fee in Huntington, Mayor Steve Williams is poised to propose the City Restroom Access Payment (C.R.A.P.) Ordinance. Under this new fee, all public restroom facilities, at public and business locations within the city limits, will be required to collect a $0.50 usage fee. “It is time to get serious about the storm water and sewage problem we face in Huntington” said Williams. “This is a fair, equitable fee that places the cost burden for repairing the city’s problematic sewage system on those that are using the sewage system.” more... http://thewestvirg iniarag.com/compon ent/k2/item/376-hu ntington-fees-goin g-down-the-toilet  (Jan 10, 2014 | post #1)

Beauty Bands for Bald Babies are Bad Idea

HUNTINGTON- Dr. Yousa Kidde, a pediatric psychology professor at Marshall University Medical School, recently addressed the West Virginia Chapter of the American Psychological Association about alarming medical problems and other impairments doctors are seeing nationwide after young girls were subjected to wearing elasticized headbands as infants. “This silly phase of putting elastic around a child’s cranium has to end. Parents need to realize how damaging this practice is, before it is too late,” Kidde said. “There is absolutely no truth that colorful headbands on infants help kids develop an esthetic sense.” more... http://thediggerer .com/component/k2/ item/370-beauty-ba nds-for-bald-babie s-are-bad-idea  (Dec 15, 2013 | post #1)
