Where is that wording in the Constitution? I'm not talking about your state's constitution either.  (Jun 5, 2012 | post #135)

Unfortunately, the moralists want to define themselves as conservatives also and bastardize the definition. To me, a moralists trying to take away the rights of others is no different than the liberals who want to take away freedoms as well. As long as someone is not infringing on the liberty or property of someone else, then I couldn't care less what they want to do.  (Jun 2, 2012 | post #13)

Boycotts don't work and allowing a committed couple to have the same rights as any other committed couple is not handing over the country. Your 1% estimate is off, but even if it wasn't that would still be 4 million Americans you want to deny equal protection to. On a side note and off topic, I love the Amite Oyster Festival and tubing down the Tangipahoa, but can't stand the amount of small minds there.  (Jun 2, 2012 | post #12)

In America we have a Constitutional guarantee of equal protection under the law. Banning same sex unions while allowing opposite sex unions and all of the legal perks that go with it is a clear violation of this right. No one is saying the union needs to be recognized or accepted by the church, but the State cannot discriminate based only on orientation. If your hang up is on the word "marriage " being used, then fine I can understand that as marriage is a religious sacrament. But it also means that the State should not be using religious terminology to define a legal contract between committed adults and the special legal benefits that come with it. Everything should be called Civil Unions with applicant one and two. As a conservative, I cannot sit by and watch Constitutional rights be denied to fellow Americans simply because the act of male/male intimacy is nauseating to me. It is healthy for society to have committed couples in a loving marriage. If you want to protect the institution of marriage, then make it harder to get divorced before you start taking away the freedoms of others.  (Jun 2, 2012 | post #9)

Risky for state's image to roll dice on casinos

I've lived and worked in the hospitality industry for over 25 years, most of those in Orlando and Las Vegas, and I can guarantee you that the family market and the adults only market do not mix. Simply put, kids can't gamble. If you're going after the casino dollars, you don't want the adults leaving the table to take the family to see the sites. If you're going after the family dollars, you don't want the parents spending all of their time and money on the casino. Casinos are fine for Central Florida, but not within 60 miles of the attractions area. Go west 60 miles from Disney and there's the Seminole Hard Rock. Go 60 miles east and there's the new gambling cruise out of Port Canaveral and poker hall/dog track/horse simulcast/jai alai in Sanford, Daytona, and Melbourne. Of course the convention hotels on I Drive want to expand gaming since their primary guest is a business traveler without kids in tow. But just ask Steve Wynn what happened to Vegas when he tried to make it more family friendly. The gaming dollars walked out of the casino so they could be spent on things the whole family could do. That's why you don't see him building theme park/casinos anymore.  (Oct 14, 2011 | post #1)

>>Travis Munnerlyn held a sign that read "Banks Caused this Crisis Make Them Pay!"<< This guy is a perfect example of an idiot in action. The banks did not pass regulations for decades mandating that they must grant subprime mortgages or face federal penalties. That was the federal government. From Carter's Community Reinvestment Act the banks were forced to lend to bad risks in minority areas. Later Clinton made the regulations and penalties even harsher on the banks. Then along comes republican Phil Gramm and his Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act which repealed major parts of the Depression Era Glass–Steagall Act. Gramm's bill, signed into law by Clinton in 1999, allowed banks to not only sell mortgages, but then use them as investment tools. This is when the bundling of subprime mortgages with creditworthy mortgages began. Bush gave a half-hearted effort to signal warning bells, but folded under pressure from Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. Frank and Dodd also essentially controlled Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, bring more subprime candidates to the banks. Bush was more than happy to tout the record homeownership of minorities under his watch, regardless of the cliff the whole process was about to drive over. From 2002 to 2005 the number of subprime mortgages shot up from 750,000 to 1.5 million. By 2006 there were 3 million So to say "Banks Caused This Crisis Make Them Pay!" is to shout "I Have No Idea What Happens In The World Around Me And I'm Not Going Bother To Find Out!"  (Oct 6, 2011 | post #1)

Could Gay Equality Finally Come From... The Right?

Too many people have confused Conservatives with Moralists. As a true conservative I want minimal intrusion in how I live my life provided I am not harming anyone or their property. Anyone who wants to amend the Constitution to add discrimination, or even seperate but equal vocabulary must be watched with an eye of suspicion. If the moralists don't want homosexuals to be married in the eyes of the State and have all of the legal rights associated with it, then the State needs to cease the use of the religious term "marriage " and all couples will have civil unions as applicant one and applicant two. Anything less is seperate but equal. To all of you moralists out there quoting your cherry picked Bible passages, God is love. He loves all of His creations. I didn't have to make a choice to be heterosexual or not, it's a natural attraction. Homosexuals have a natural attraction to the same gender. Who are you to question or condemn God's design?  (Sep 18, 2011 | post #37)

S&P Downgrades US

Debt may go up and down during a presidency, but it's Congress that controls the purse strings. The projected surplus under Clinton was due to conservative republicans taking control of the House and Senate in 2004, trying balance the budget and reducing spending. Under Bush, democrats controled the Senate and rebublicans the House for the first two years, republicans had everything for 4, then democrats had Congress for his last two. The record 2008 deficit was authored by the democrats in Congress and signed into law by Bush. I'm not giving big spending republicans a pass, and Bush was no fiscal conservative. He used the events of 9/11 to grow the size of government with new departments rather than working with what we already have and fix the problems within them. These big spenders are the very reason the democrats were given the Congress in 2006. The first two years, democrats could blame everything on Bush when they were spending the money. After two years of everything, with super majorities to boot, there is no one to hide behind anymore. That's when you have the rise of the Tea Party in 2010 and change of control of the House to the republicans. The could have had the Senate too they didn't turn on themselves  (Aug 6, 2011 | post #7)

Obama Administration Official Calls S&P Analysis 'Way Off'

The republicans were out of power in Congress in 2007 and Bush hasn't said or done anything since 2009 and you still want to pass the buck to them? That is what's wrong with people who think like you, nothing is based in reality. Liberal democrats had an unstoppable super majority in Congress for the first two full years of Obama's presidency and did nothing for jobs except kill them. The so called stimulus only served to sink us further into debt. If Obama really wanted to save the economy he would scrap his healthcare boondoggle. He could suspend payroll taxes for a year. He could tell Tim Geithner to stop printing money. But no, it's Bush and his cronies. I understand why you think Bush is still in office since Obama has done nothing except expand Bush policies. Gitmo is still open, we're still in Iraq and Afghanistan (and now Libya), warrantless wiretaps were expanded, and on and on. Obama inherited nothing that he did not help create while he was in the Senate. Congress spends the money, not the president. The record $487 billion deficit in 2008 was spent by a democrat Congress. If they didn't want Bush's policies then they didn't have to fund them. But maybe it's just easier for you to blame people out of power. You don't have to think as much.  (Aug 6, 2011 | post #43)

Obama Administration Official Calls S&P Analysis 'Way Off'

That's easy to prove. Tea Party backed republicans put forth Cut, Cap, and Balance, not the Boehner/Reid/Obama plan. The S&P said all the way back in April that we had to cut the rate of growth of federal debt by at least $4 trillion over the next 10 years. That could have been done by freezing spending at 2007 levels, and was suggested by Senator George LeMieux from Florida. The plan would balance the budget by 2013 and cut the national debt in half by 2020. Don't believe the numbers? A review of the proposal by PolitiFact confirmed the math is solid. The political establishment is never going to vote to reduce their power, and their power comes from spending tax dollars. Either you are willfully ignorant, or a troll. I think probably the latter.  (Aug 6, 2011 | post #42)

You must be smoking crack. Since Obama and the democrats took control of Congress in 2007 the federal debt has shot up $5.5 trillion. There was no Tea Party until the last election, and it's because of the out of control spending. If Bush and republicans spent like drunken sailors, Obama and the democrats have spent like a drunken navy. It can't be sustained, especially when we get Obamacare forced down our throats, projecting deficits in the trillions for the next decade.  (Aug 5, 2011 | post #4)

U.S. Warned Of Possible Credit Downgrade

Well it's official now. The S&P has downgraded us from AAA rating. This had nothing to do with the debt ceiling and everything to do with overspending that has grown exponentially in the last 10 years. The federal debt at the end of fiscal 2000 was already at $5.6 trillion. With democrats in control of the Senate and republicans in control of the House in 2001 and 2002, the debt rose to $6.2 trillion. With Republicans in control of Congress from 2003-2006 the debt climbed to $8.5 trillion. Democrats retook Congress from 2007-2010 and the debt ballooned to $14 trillion. This is when you first started to hear of the Tea Party. The Tea Party wants a balanced budget and real cuts. S&P said they would downgrade if there were not at least $4 trillion in cuts. Get rid of Obamacare and we won't have projected deficits in the trillions each year. End baseline budgeting and we won't have out of control mandatory increases in spending year after year. Elect true fiscal conservatives and pay attention to reality, not the political establishment and their sycophants in the info-tainment media.  (Aug 5, 2011 | post #52)

While you are perfectly free to disagree, you're completely incorrect. The downgrade had nothing to do with the debt ceiling and everything to do with how much we are spending, or more to the point, overspending. The federal debt at the end of fiscal 2000 was already at $5.6 trillion. With democrats in control of the Senate and republicans in control of the House in 2001 and 2002, the debt rose to $6.2 trillion. Gay Marriage - Orlando, FL

If God didn't want men to lay with men, then why did he create homosexuals? It's not like you had to be taught to be attracted to someone, you just have those feelings around puberty. I've always loved women and the sight of two men making out makes me queasy, but it doesn't mean they are not children of God.  (Aug 5, 2011 | post #193)
