Deer hunting on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation
Any feedback on how you did up there? I was thinking about going in 2010. (Nov 20, 2009 | post #4)
I just hunted deer in Kansas where baiting is legal. I didn't hunt with bait because it just seemed lame. But, the deer weren't moving and the only way we could get on them was by doing drives. Kansas has some HUGE whitetails, but it's pretty hard to judge them as they're busting out of cover. I ended up shooting a 3.5 year old deer on a drive, which actually made me feel pretty guilty. I wish I had more time to judge him, let him go, and hold out for a bigger one -- but this is pretty hard to do on a drive, where you might only have a second or two to judge and decide. Reflecting on the Kansas hunt, it occurs to me that baiting may allow hunters to be more selective, which could mean good things for age class distribution and the overall health of the herd.
