4,000 have died from swine flu, CDC will say

Been sick as hell for five days now but Saturday night was the worst. High fever and cough. I'm sure if I died today the CDC would chalk it up to asthma or bronchitis. My heart isn't exactly the healthiest either, so maybe it would be a heart attack. When the first numbers came in, 1 in 10 who caught the swine flu were dying. 800 of the first 8000. That's scary stuff. The numbers were worse here in Florida. Then the numbers were revised to whitewash the cause of death. Sure, the person died of pneumonia... but wouldn't have died if not for the flu. Until I see better numbers, I still believe the death rate is one in ten to one in fifteen. They just don't want the panic.  (9 hrs ago | post #7)

Hey Thor: I really wasn't trying to criticize you. It's just that the only religion being worshipped here is the almighty dollar. We might elect them, we may even choose the lesser of the evils, but when it comes down to it: Money talks and the rest of us are left farther and farther behind.  (Thursday Oct 29 | post #11)

Thor: Part of me understands what you are saying and the other part of me wants you to move to China. The main problem with this new development is that it has more to do with generating more tax base than bettering the lives of the existing citizens. And, even worse, this will cost us all more in the long run. Even if the country had zero population growth, our leaders would still try to steal population from other jurisdictions just to increase the tax base. But from where will come the jobs for these new citizens? Construction? Bullcrap. That is the pyramid scheme of pyramid schemes. I'm tired of our leaders listening to rich developers and using their catch phrases -- smart growth, etc. -- to sell us a bucket of sh!t disguised as progress when it's only true purpose is to increase the tax base and line the developers' pockets. Tax breaks to manufacturers and large employers. That is the way to better the lives of our citizens, not adding more to the population. Who is our govenment working for? You? Me? Nope. They work for the millionaires. They will approve thousands of housing units at Airport Rd. and Pioneer Trail, yet turn down a 60,000 square foot commercial center because the area is too rural. They can KMA. We need jobs. We need jobs. We need jobs.  (Thursday Oct 29 | post #10)

Man found shot to death in Edgewater

Fooling? The joke is on you. I'm not hiding anything. Born in NSB and it is my real picture. Didn't you mean to say, "...we'll see about you and your little dog too."? You are obviously not a computer expert or you wouldn't make such ignorant statements. I have never done anything to affect the placement of my ISP nor do I feel I have any need to. I, unlike you, know that it can be done. I have a degree in computer engineering technology. A recent degree at that. Nothing to crow about, really, since I have been building my own computers since you were wetting your pants. So bring it on and "see" about me. You don't have the skills to even see if brighthouse is my real ISP. Look kid... I'm a retired electrician, farm raise clams in Oak Hill, and love NSB. What is there to hide? Let's see you try to even find my IP address. You can't do it even with my verified account on Topix. Unless you want to try to get a court order. Good luck with that. Your 'threat' about seeing about me is hollow. There is nothing to see. Squeal your wheels all you like. All it is is noise.  (Tuesday Oct 27 | post #217)

Controversial Flagler hotel plan again in front of leaders

At this point, I am actually starting to believe a Pioneer Trail interchange with 95 isn't such a bad idea. I'll bet they would have approved a thousand more housing units for that same "rural" space.  (Monday Oct 26 | post #3)

Controversial Flagler hotel plan again in front of leaders

"OTHER LAND MATTERS: Elected officials will request city staff draft a letter opposing the development of 60,000 square feet of commercial space at the corner of Airport Road and Pioneer Trail, at New Smyrna Beach's border with Port Orange. The city's position is the project will generate too much traffic for the rural road." Too much traffic for Pioneer Trail and Airport Rd. but the traffic generated by a hotel on Flagler will be OK? What about the hundreds -- if not thousands -- of residences OK'd and built at Venetian Bay, just yards from that same intersection? Wouldn't this commercial space serve them and REDUCE traffic that now travels to Port Orange for the same services? What the h*ll? That same 60,000 square feet would employ more people that a hotel.  (Monday Oct 26 | post #1)

Man found shot to death in Edgewater

I don't know about lurker, but my ISP is wherever Brighthouse says my ISP is. I suppose there is a way to change it if offends anyone. Sometimes NSB, and sometimes Edgewater. This Austin thing seems to be new. As far as Chatty Cathy goes, she reminds me of someone who squeals their tires. Yeah, they sometimes get my attention and I look up and say, "Idiot", and go on about my day.  (Monday Oct 26 | post #206)

Editor Statement

New Smyrna Beach native. I have watched 'progress' steal the live oaks from Lytle Avenue and the canopy from Saxon Drive. Historical buildings have fallen into disrepair and been destroyed just so the land underneath could be developed. The soul of a small town is being raped by the greedy... and it is called progress. OK, I could rant about sport fishermen -vs- commercial fishermen (too late, the sport fishermen won), but what I really want to see is real progress. Real local jobs and opportunities for local workers, not temporary growth jobs which only add to the population and leave workers looking for another job. Also, I would like to see an end to the blatant racism appearing in the forum. I'm sure there are plenty of outlets for racists on the internet without injecting racism here.
