New Smyrna Beach to discuss hotel proposal for Flagler Avenue
Yeah, probably a "do over" and probably the same results, but maybe. It could have been some of the last minute consessions to the developer that caused it. Maybe some of the residents are realizing exactly what the toll will be on their little street. You can't hide from a monster like that. (Thursday Nov 19 | post #37)

It is obvious this government doesn't care about real progress. They sell us out to the service industry. Yes, Mr. Tourist, no, Mr. Tourist. Can I shine your boots, Mr. Tourist? What about real jobs? Tax incentives to manufacturing companies who don't need our most valuable real estate to do business? They should have stuck to there guns and kept the idea on the North Causeway where it belongs. A few decent restaurants along there and you end up with a nice walk to the beach. The hotel could have a shuttle to the beach and further cut down on Flagler traffic. We have been officially discounted. A few businesses will profit immensely from this and the rest of us can only shake our heads, watch another chunk of our heritage disappear forever, and imagine what Flagler could have looked like with the right businesses there. 4,000 have died from swine flu, CDC will say
I am saying right here and now that when there had only been 8000 confirmed cases nationwide, 800 of those died. The numbers were worse in Florida. Did the virus weaken? Maybe. Did they purposely skew the statistics after the fact to not include those who died of secondary causes in the overall statistics? Absolutely and admittedly. You tell me why they didn't include deaths from pneumonia in the statistics? What other secondary causes of death are also not being included? I can understand that if someone who has the flu dies in a car accident it should not be included. But what about asthma? Bronchitis? Heart disease? Encephalitis? Are all of these exempt from the roles? And what else? (Friday Nov 13 | post #11)
4,000 have died from swine flu, CDC will say
Been sick as hell for five days now but Saturday night was the worst. High fever and cough. I'm sure if I died today the CDC would chalk it up to asthma or bronchitis. My heart isn't exactly the healthiest either, so maybe it would be a heart attack. When the first numbers came in, 1 in 10 who caught the swine flu were dying. 800 of the first 8000. That's scary stuff. The numbers were worse here in Florida. Then the numbers were revised to whitewash the cause of death. Sure, the person died of pneumonia... but wouldn't have died if not for the flu. Until I see better numbers, I still believe the death rate is one in ten to one in fifteen. They just don't want the panic. (Thursday Nov 12 | post #7)

New Smyrna Beach native. I have watched 'progress' steal the live oaks from Lytle Avenue and the canopy from Saxon Drive. Historical buildings have fallen into disrepair and been destroyed just so the land underneath could be developed. The soul of a small town is being raped by the greedy... and it is called progress. OK, I could rant about sport fishermen -vs- commercial fishermen (too late, the sport fishermen won), but what I really want to see is real progress. Real local jobs and opportunities for local workers, not temporary growth jobs which only add to the population and leave workers looking for another job. Also, I would like to see an end to the blatant racism appearing in the forum. I'm sure there are plenty of outlets for racists on the internet without injecting racism here.
