Alcohol sales

Good Luck with getting an answer here. I live in South Jones, and it may have been because at One Time it was more of a Biblical Area, than a Partying Place, but that is Not True. Now it all goes on, just everyone around, Including Law Officers have to break the law. We all go to Other towns and Donate our Tax Dollars to them. Maybe we just have Soooo Much, that we aren't in Need so our government feels it is too much of a Hassle. Since there is all kinds of Drug Dealings, Alcohol, Speeding, and Violence going on around here, it can't be because it would cause Any More Law Breaking to get Started.  (Mar 25, 2007 | post #2)

Smoking issues are rising up in Mississippi

Jim Cameron's Commentary Give the tax bill a shot The Mississippi House has passed a bill by a wide majority and sent it on to the Senate that would cut the state tax on groceries from 7 percent to 3 ½ percent and raise the tax on cigarettes by a dollar a pack. Whether the Senate will even take it up is in question. At any rate, Governor Barbour has promised to veto it if passed. Some small municipalities are concerned that this would compromise their tax base since sales tax is the big revenue stream for cities. Some say the two would offset each other and no city should suffer. Frankly, I don't know...but using the common sense rule--the rule most often ignored by government-the answer seems obvious. Since the state always needs money and Mississippi has the second lowest tax on cigarettes in the nation at 18-cents a pack. Cigarettes cause health problems often paid for by Medicaid which is a strain on tax payers. Why not raise the tax on cigarettes and see how much money it brings in. People have to have food for basic sustenance. If, after a year the tobacco tax makes up the difference in what cities would lose by cutting the grocery tax by a certain amount-next year cut the grocery tax. We are a poor state and giving folks a break on their food tax simply makes more sense to me than having the 49th lowest cigarette tax in the nation. Or is that too simple? I'm Jim Cameron with today's commentary. Let us know where you stand.  (Mar 13, 2007 | post #324)

Mississippi Government

Miss. Gov don't mind kids dying

What I would love to do,is meet you in any city you choose, and gather the first 500 people that come along, and show you that far more than 20% of the people smoke....if it is less than 50% I would be shocked...the stores in our town with the largest clientele are the discount tobacco stores.I would agree to sections for non-smokers,with a seperate room for smokers...a vent fan would keep the smoke from the people who are offended by it...by the way...more innocent people are killed every year by drunk and drugged drivers than second hand smoke...how many drinks did you have this week????  (Mar 10, 2007 | post #36)

Fighting Stereotypes About Mississippi

Off and On. Lived in Pass Christian for a while. But for the most part, Gulfport. Worked at 8 Flags and Marine Life when I was 14. We were lucky enough to get one of the 3bdrm mobile homes from Fema, but I have been thrilled to get back into our house. Hate that trailor. The day that the people came to set the trailor up, we recieved a letter in our mail that said that Fema would be Unable to help us, since our damages were from lack of Maintenance and not Hurricane Related. We showed reciepts that showed our roof wasn't 2 yrs old. but with all the appeals we had to file, we said the heck with it, paid to get the house fixed ourselves and are still Waiting for them to come get this Trailor...lol  (Mar 8, 2007 | post #258)

If you have Jesus in your life, that is wonderful. But keep in mind, You are not The Judge of whether Others they do, or Not, and as much Running Your Mouth that you do, You could stand a Little LESS time TRYING to Type, and READ Your BIBLE More. Maybe then, This Problem YOU Have with Our Flag, wouldn't Bother You so much. I haven't really seen a Lot of folks backing down from you, just because You mentioned Jesus. If Jesus had a Problem with the Mississippi Flag, then I am Absolutely Posative, that he could have found a way to get RID of it, and there would be nothing Any of Us Mere Mortals could do to stop Him.  (Mar 8, 2007 | post #49)

Smoking issues are rising up in Mississippi

I beleive that We are beginning to live in a Communist Country. I am Against the Smoking Ban!!! I do agree with You, I smoke, and as a smoker I try to respect people that Don't and Businesses, that do Not Allow Smoking. When I choose a place to eat out, I make sure First, is it Smoking or Non Smoking. I have ate at restaruants that are Non Smoking, but for the most part, I prefer the Smoking Ones. I also, like you, do and have not had the Government TAKE Care of me, in Any Way. I pay my own bills, and pay for my own bad habits. I do Not understand why more and more people do Not have a problem with the Government Telling ANY Citizen that they are fixing to be Taking More of Our Rights Away.  (Mar 6, 2007 | post #319)
