Do I ever wish my story was better than owning several country business in regional QLD and some mining catering contracts, self manage my super by buying regional properties, like country & 70/80's rock music, been married for 23 years, have 2 kids - son in the air force, family arrived here on 2nd fleet, live in a renovated qlder on 200 drought affected hectares which i'm trying to rejuvenate, have been bankrupt, held-up, failed year 11 & 12, my 1st 2 jobs lasted less than 16 weeks because both business closed down due to tarrif cuts by Hawke, been a grave digger, worked 10 months in a chicken processing plant, worked in a aged home for 6 weeks bathing old folks, worked in a tip collecting recyclable material people dumped in wrong place, never been on the dole, backpacked OS for 3 years, mum was a very popular prostitute & I was raised by my grandmother just so people on here believe me. NAH. Do I care if anyone believes it? NAH.  (Sep 8, 2014 | post #60)

Why do Australians whinge about immigration

Your example was desert that was made fertile (CSIR experiment i believe) that is mostly desert again as opposed to what I am saying taking once fertile land that was made barren & remaking fertile. BTW 90-mile dessert does have several olive groves and produces a large amount of honey and last time I was in Tintinara they were still grazing a large number of cattle in the region. But more importantly native vegetation such as dwarf oak, tea tree & banksia "forrests " is growing providing safe habitat for several native animals such as mallee fowl, pygmy possum & echidnasArizona & New Mexico have been growing cotton & sugarbeet for more than 70 years with salt water. Tunisia uses salt water to grown dates, barley, artichokes for 50 years. Egypt mixes sea water with Nile river water (50/50) for 25 years to grow rice, cotton & barley. Israel has been growing tomatoes, asparagus & peppers for over 25 years with salt water. Lebanon & Israel have developed a potato that grows in salt water. For nearly 30 years China has had 600,000 acres of wheat & rice irrigated by salt water. There are hundreds of long term examples that prove this works. Then you can farm hydroponically - even in the desertI assume you use the same book of facts as Foo? Egypt has replanted 30,000 acres of forest over last 15 years with plans to reforest 400,000 acres in total.  (Sep 7, 2014 | post #105)

scrap superannuation for the poor

How to set a world currency? Do you slash our wages to what the Chinese or Kenyans earn? Or do you raise the costs to the rest of the world to ours & send 90% of the world into a depression & poverty? What kept the balance was tarrifs which have been continually lowered since Hawke. But then we got to stop crying poor all the farcking time & start using our initiative. Value add to our resources & sell that overseas instead of letting other countries do that. Stop being unrealistic in wage demands. Invest in infrastructure - can't send the building of roads & dams overseas.  (Sep 7, 2014 | post #8)

Why do Australians whinge about immigration

1/4 of the land that you say is inhabital is repairable. And we have the technology to make another 10% of the country habited. The land was ruined by our ancestors thinking they could over farm the land as they did in England & clearing millions of hectares of trees. But for the last 50 years we have done nothing to attempt to repair the land. Moroccans are reforesting the sahara & planting straw fences to stop the walking sand dunes. http://www.groasis .com/images/phocag allery/desert_plan ting/thumbs/phoca_ thumb_l_14.jpg We can also use technology to farm vast amounts of the outback. purify bore water for aquaculture, hydroponic & aquaponics. They don't need fertile land in city suburbs to be viable. With a little effort you can dig a 1mt hole 2 feet deep & turn it into a furtile spot to grow a fruit tree with drip irrigation. I visited one with over 1000 trees in the majove dessert. Israel grow veggies in the dessert using salt water filtered by sand & soil. To say we don't have viable land is naive. To say we're full is stup1d. Everywhere I look there are opportunities to make money & jobs.  (Sep 7, 2014 | post #69)

scrap superannuation for the poor

actually Foo the ALP make workers pay the super increase by lowering their payrises. The most recent payrise workers got only 2.6%, below cost of living increase of 3%, because 0.5% was taken as increased super. How does that help low income workers getting less than CPI increases help them out of poverty? Make super not compulsory for those earning under $40k - to take the extra $60 to $80/wk to improve their living standard. And people earning under $40k will never have enough super to retire on anyway so they will be requiring a strong aged pension to exist to pay a part pension.  (Sep 6, 2014 | post #6)

Why do Australians whinge about immigration

An important point is who we let in. No one that needs welfare & public housing. Almost everyone else would be paying or contributing towards the cost. Business who bring in 457 workers can pay a $5000 per employee per year fee. How many new jobs are created getting people off welfare? More workers means more tax revenue for all levels of gov't.  (Sep 6, 2014 | post #36)

If you're on min wage, or earning under $40k, is it not better to have that 10% extra as pay in your pocket today to spend rather than locked away for decades? It makes no different to employers but how many people will benefit from from an $60 or $70 a week to spend? And how many small business would benefit with an extra $4b floating in the economy? The aged pension can be guaranteed for all these people by 1) abolishing welfare for people earning over $70k & 2) making all companies pay tax on revenue earned in Australia. Last year companies sent $131b to tax free or extremely low tax countries.  (Sep 6, 2014 | post #1)

creating more reservists

And I mean more than army reservists. Police, ambulance, fire-fighters, SES etc. Make a commitment and be rewarded just like army reserves are. Additional tax free income of up to $10k/yr. This could be a good network for unemployed people to get into plus earn extra money without affecting their dole. Use the money how you like. Take it & spend it or have it put into your super fund knowing that portion or the interest it gains will ever be taxed. Of course all candidates must meet all entrance requirements. Going beyond emergency services - hospital helpers, aged care assistants, pre school assistants - positions for people who may have limited time but want to help or people looking to work p/t while looking for something else. We have a ever growing shortage of volunteers and in this day & age fewer people are willing to do something for nothing.  (Sep 4, 2014 | post #1)
