ATLAS Higgs Results: One Or Two Higgs?

I think you're right. They had to call it a Higgs because it got sold for $10 billion to find a Higgs, but it may be something even more interesting.  (Jan 15, 2013 | post #2)

I agree, and people make the same claim about guns and violence and sex in media, alcohol, you name it. Why we have controls on anything children can buy is a mystery, since apparently sensory inputs don't ever change people  (Sep 5, 2012 | post #2)

First lady says election closer than 2008

It should be closer this year. In 2008 Pres Obama did not take public financing and McCain was stuck with it, so Obama got to spend 2X as much money as McCain, more than Bush and Kerry spent combined in 2004. The Republican challenger is at least not shackled by that. He'll still lose; we haven't had an incumbent defeated in 20 years.  (Jul 16, 2012 | post #1)

Anti-Science Hippies Make Progress Toward Labelling GMOs ...

I was okay with most of your comment, and then you went into crackpottery with that last sentence. I don't care how many steers you raised - I raised a few as well - there is zero science data for your claim.  (Jun 22, 2012 | post #8)

Anti-Science Hippies Make Progress Toward Labelling GMOs ...

What's wrong with Wal Mart beef? It is going to have the same standard as any other beef and the same spot checking as any other beef, organic or not: very little. The label says what, beef?  (Jun 22, 2012 | post #6)

Anti-Science Hippies Make Progress Toward Labelling GMOs ...

That's kind of like asking why Jews need to hide if they don't want a special label, right? The legislation is not about truth, it is about a warning label - to scare people - over something that has done no harm. Organic food has sickened and killed far more people than any GMOs, since GMOs are sitting at zero. If they required accuracy in labels for all foods, rather than just the genetic makeup, that would be worthwhile. But it would kill the organic food industry. You do not want to know what is in or on organic food.  (Jun 19, 2012 | post #4)

Anti-Science Hippies Make Progress Toward Labelling GMOs ...

Well, maybe you are a sane hippie rather than an anti-science one. Nothing wrong with sane huppies. But you do not know what is in your food right now. Do you know what 100% organic means? It means 95% organic with dozens of synthetic ingredients. Do you know what pesticides are on your organic food? No you do not. Do you know what GMOs are in the feed of your organic beef? No, and this legislation specifically exempts the organic food multinationals from any accountability. You can avoid GMOs as easily as organic. How many sugar beets do you eat?  (Jun 19, 2012 | post #2)

Trust In Science Has Declined Among Conservatives

Ummm, 45% of scientists in America are religious and a lot more worldwide. Do they hate themselves? Do they also hate irony?  (Apr 30, 2012 | post #7)

Some homophobia is self-phobia: Study

You're willing to use study and survey interchangeably because social psychologists do. That does not make it real. If you look at this actual new 'study' it is, once again, just a survey of a few hundred college students. The whole field is based on nothing but surveys of college students. The title and claim is pleasant enough confirmation bias - that is why I can use environmentalists wanting to be oil barons for those inclined to believe it - but it is not science.  (Apr 16, 2012 | post #273)

Science

Trust In Science Has Declined Among Conservatives

But the stats show conservatives fund science a lot more than liberals - you can't claim to love science and cut funding and you can't be anti-science and pass and sign laws increasing its funding.  (Apr 16, 2012 | post #4)

Science

Some homophobia is self-phobia: Study

Using this sociology logic, environmentalists secretly want to be oil barons and Democrats secretly want to be Republicans. And sociologists secretly want to be actual scientists.  (Apr 16, 2012 | post #270)

UT biosolar breakthrough promises cheap, easy green elect...

There aren't many instances where entrenched companies were able to keep out better competitors. It isn't like there were no search engine companies before Google, the market was quite saturated. Ditto with mp3 players and Apple. No technology starts off better. The first CD burner cost $5,000 yet no one said 'it can't compete today so we should not build it', that is what the free market is for. These energy sources will not scale today, it is basic research  (Mar 3, 2012 | post #5)

Editor Statement

There's a confluence of science, politics and culture that's happening right now. If we're going to be involved in the decisions, we need to be informed. I'm here to make people aware of the latest science - and I'll probably kick around a few of the fad science topics that come up also.
