Black Hat: Your Social Security Number Can Be Predicted With On...

I'm giggling at the Kontera text ads all over your comment. Who knew you meant for the words 'private information' to be an advertisement for cuff links? :) Kontera sucks and if Topix needs the extra $.25 per thousand readers, that's okay, but it's some higher level of annoying. I am surprised Google doesn't tank companies that put text links in comments like that.  (Jul 10, 2009 | post #2)

Missing Link? Darwinius Masillae Transitional Fossil Has Human-...

Yes, I saw the rather exaggerated accounts also. Even Google fell prey to it, changing their logo to be a picture of the little lemur that could. It is an important discovery, to be sure, but there is no magic bullet in science. Some people will never believe in evolution just like they never believed in germs. There's too much money tied up in denying evolution for anyone to nod their heads over a fossil, no matter how transitional it is.  (May 20, 2009 | post #5)

Missing Link? Transitional Fossil Has Human-Like Nails And Oppo...

Well, this was among the least hyped accounts of this discovery. I think you're right in being skeptical in the notion that this is the base of the human tree but it's important, not just because it's a transitional fossil but because (1) Biology predicted it should exist if it could exist at all (fossils being tricky business) (2) Geology told us where we would be most likely to find it (3) Paleontology found it. So more than just biology, it shows the scientific method works (again).  (May 20, 2009 | post #2)

Editor Statement

There's a confluence of science, politics and culture that's happening right now. If we're going to be involved in the decisions, we need to be informed. I'm here to make people aware of the latest science - and I'll probably kick around a few of the fad science topics that come up also.
