Beacon, NY

beacon used to be a great place

Yeah, Dia certainly brought a need breed of visitors. One clown with Connecticut plates flipped me the bird at the Beacon Metro North station. And he was elderly! The chattering classes come up and visit, but they go home after taking in the exhibits. I was there on opening day, and I noticed that not a single Afro-American artist had any work on display there. There's Andy Warhol, German artists, Ellsworth Kelly and Louise Bourgeois, more German artists, plenty of European stuff, but not a full spectrum of American artists. Just like Manhattan. It's all about establishment artists and money makers. Thankfully, Beacon has retained its charms. I'm from the Bronx originally, and nothing I've seen here or in Newburgh comes close to the urban decay I've seen ther. We're raising a family in Fishkill, and I highly recommend this area.  (Aug 15, 2008 | post #5)

In protest: Man cuts off own head with chainsaw

You can't fight City Hall. Where was Heather Mills when this poor disabled man was being threatened with eviction? Where's the compassion? Was Sting too busy "saving" the rain forest? These British eat their own.  (Jul 16, 2008 | post #373)

Cops: Elderly, disabled NY man dies in locked car

Nothing here indicates the son intended this outcome. He called the police as soon as he realized his father was unresponsive. Without a doubt, he should have known better. But this may or may not be manslaughter.  (Jul 14, 2008 | post #3)

Beacon is still nice, and just one town away from us. Dutchess county has been "discovered " just as Putnam and Orange were. So goes the march of time. Fishkill and Beacon have retained their charms. Ulster is changing, too. Even the capital region is seeing a spike in gun crime. Everything changes.  (Jul 5, 2008 | post #2)

Liam lights up Relay for Life

My son used to attend the Glenham Elem. school, though he's a few years younger than Liam. God bless this remarkable boy and his family.  (Jun 23, 2008 | post #1)

CNN: Is Barack Obama black or biracial?

Tiger Woods, Halle Berry and Barack Obama all appear Black, and though Mr. Woods has called himself "cablinasian " (caucasian, Black, American Indian and Asian), when he faced disparagement from his fellow golfer, it was not because of his other ethnicities, but his Black one. Is there a double standard? Yes. Keanu Reeves is not a spokesperson for Chinese or Hawaiians. His movie roles have been generic white. insists that the actress Jessica Alba has declared "don't call me Latina." There is no option of hiding your ancestry for most Black people. Their appearances say it all. It is healthy for Black people to embrace their ancestry. Sen. Obama looks like a Black man--tall, brown, handsome and with full lips and a wide nose. He embraces his Kansas family as well and is ever thankful for their support. He straddles more than one community. It is a balancing act, but he's been brilliant in his success.  (Jun 11, 2008 | post #177)

Cannes top prize has 'Class'

Well, there's also the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion and other European awards. Nanni Moretti won that for "Caro Diario" ("Dear Diary") in 1994, but the Palme d'Or went to Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction." Hollywood movies have a larger market, plain and simple. We churn out silicone enhanced blondes, while European actresses are less likely to submit to breast and nose surgeries and are happily brunette. It should be about talent and storytelling and craft, but we tend to revere beauty and are easily manipulated by targeted marketing. I found some recent European movies to be real gems ("Italian for Beginners" from Denmark; "The Best of Youth" from Italy), but they run in limited engagements here and only appear in major U.S. cities. Only a few movies have been able to break out and capture the world's attention like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" has. Still, I say "vive la difference."  (May 26, 2008 | post #1)

N.Y. Governor Pardons Rap Pioneer 'Slick Rick'

I hope Gov. Patterson will look for other deserving NYers, some who aren't well-off or politically connected. Let a poor guy get a second chance as well.  (May 26, 2008 | post #12)

If I were being paid a reported $100 million to hawk a product, I would be a shameless promoter of it. C'mon, Diddy. You signed a deal, now live up to its terms. Sheesh.  (May 26, 2008 | post #2)

So does he confirm the breakup rumors? Is this Tameka really "crazy"? Let's hope there was a solid pre-nup.  (May 26, 2008 | post #1)

Emergency workers rescue woman from Fishkill Creek

I hope she's all right. Perhaps there is an underlying mental health issue? Let's hope they don't just "treat her and street her."  (Mar 19, 2008 | post #1)

Paterson To Be Sworn In As N.Y.'s Governor

Mr. Paterson is on record as supporting HRC, but he doesn't get Mr. Spitzer's superdelegate vote. That's just the way the cookie crumbles. What I'd like to know is, Why were you so sure that Mr. Paterson supported Sen. Obama? Plenty of Black NYers have sided with Hillary, and he's one of them. The NY Democratic machine cast their lot with her early on, to the consternation of many other democrats.  (Mar 17, 2008 | post #8)

Medical Center Staff Fired for Britney Spears Snooping

Kudos to the hospital for putting its foot down and demanding professionalism from its staff. Another hospital disciplined its staff for similar infractions against their famous client, George Clooney, after his motorcycle accident. We can't allow ourselves to be blinded by the glare of celebrity. These are human beings, patients and clients, and their privacy rights must be respected.  (Mar 16, 2008 | post #83)
