Lehigh University student got a C+ and now seeks $1.3 mil...

http://news.yahoo. com/lehigh-univers ity-student-got-c- 124956418.html 'Hamburg pointed out that Thode is the daughter of Lehigh finance professor Stephen Thode. One of the perks of that relationship was that she was able to enroll in the Lehigh graduate program tuition-free. The school provided her with a job as well. She also got to attend York College of Pennsylvania at no charge as an undergraduate thanks to her Lehigh connections, says The Call. Thode was on the witness stand Monday. Another Lehigh attorney, Michael Sacks, grilled her about her free ride. “Even after you sued Lehigh, you were getting free tuition and working for Lehigh?” Sacks queried. “Yes,” Thode answered. Lehigh’s lawyers allege that Thode’s behavior in class was not acceptable for someone seeking a master’s degree in counseling. On at least one occasion, they said, she used profanity in class. Another time, she broke down crying. Before filing her lawsuit, Thode filed complaints with the university over the C+ grade, showing up at meetings with her father, the finance professor. She sought a written apology from Carr, the course instructor, and a “plan for compensating me financially,” notes The Morning Call.'  (Feb 12, 2013 | post #1)

SEAL who shot bin Laden speaks out

http://news.yahoo. com/blogs/lookout/ seal-shot-osama-bi n-laden-speaks-143 245195.html 'In an interview with Esquire, the former SEAL—identified as "The Shooter" due to what the magazine described as "safety" reasons—said he's been largely abandoned by the U.S. government since leaving the military last fall. He told Esquire he decided to speak out to both correct the record of the bin Laden mission and to put a spotlight on how some of the U.S. military's highly trained and accomplished soldiers are treated by the government once they return to civilian life. Despite killing the world's most-wanted terrorist, he said, he was not given a pension, health care or protection for himself or his family. "[SEAL command] told me they could get me a job driving a beer truck in Milwaukee," he told Esquire. Plus, he said, "my health care for me and my family stopped. I asked if there was some transition from my Tricare to Blue Cross Blue Shield. They said no. You're out of the service, your coverage is over. Thanks for your 16 years. Go f--- yourself." Great Teachers Can't Save America's Schools

But if they teach that what would all the liberal 'thinkers' do???? My biggest problem with modern education is they do not teach people how to learn on their own. Argument is all well and good but people have not learned how to find information to support their arguments. What passes for 'facts' these days are nothing but propaganda and sound bites.  (Feb 11, 2013 | post #3)

Solar industry grapples with hazardous wastes

http://news.yahoo. com/solar-industry -grapples-hazardou s-wastes-184714679 .html 'SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Homeowners on the hunt for sparkling solar panels are lured by ads filled with images of pristine landscapes and bright sunshine, and words about the technology's benefits for the environment — and the wallet. What customers may not know is that there's a dirtier side. While solar is a far less polluting energy source than coal or natural gas, many panel makers are nevertheless grappling with a hazardous waste problem. Fueled partly by billions in government incentives, the industry is creating millions of solar panels each year and, in the process, millions of pounds of polluted sludge and contaminated water.'  (Feb 11, 2013 | post #1)

New whooping cough strain in US raises questions

http://news.yahoo. com/whooping-cough -strain-us-raises- questions-22490974 4.html 'An increase in illnesses in recent years has been partially blamed on a version of the vaccine used since the 1990s, which doesn't last as long. Last year, the CDC received reports of 41,880 cases, according to a preliminary count. That included 18 deaths. The new study suggests that the new whooping cough strain may be why more people have been getting sick. Experts don't think it's more deadly, but the shots may not work as well against it. In a small, soon-to-be published study, French researchers found the vaccine seemed to lower the risk of severe disease from the new strain in infants. But it didn't prevent illness completely, said Nicole Guiso of the Pasteur Institute, one of the researchers. The new germ was first identified in France, where more extensive testing is routinely done for whooping cough. The strain now accounts for 14 percent of cases there, Guiso said.'  (Feb 7, 2013 | post #1)

The Civil War Has Begun

I just flipped a coin when I registered. It can be argued if the republicans won or lost the toss. There are no parties for conservatives any more but I still vote in the primaries.  (Feb 7, 2013 | post #6)

Boyfriends for hire

http://www.bbc.co. uk/news/world-asia -china-21192131 '"I'm pretty old - I'm almost 30 - but I'm still single," explains Ding Na, a woman hailing from China's northeast. "I'm under lots of pressure. My sisters and my relatives all ask me why I'm not married. When they call me, I'm scared to pick up the phone." ' '"Chinese people love to get together for dinner. On New Year's Eve, everybody is sitting in pairs, your brother with your sister-in-law, your sister with your brother-in-law, and so on. If you're the only one left behind, you can imagine the pressure and frustration." Luckily for some, China's most popular online marketplace, Taobao, offers a band-aid solution: the rental of fake boyfriends. For as little as $50 (£32) a day, dozens of classified adverts promise to provide a male companion for the holidays, pretending to be a single woman's plus-one. Some postings list a full menu of possibilities - charging $5 an hour to accompany a girl to dinner and $8 for a kiss on the cheek. If the fake boyfriend stays overnight with his client's family for Chinese New Year, he charges $80 a night to sleep in his own bed, and $95 to sleep on the couch.'  (Feb 7, 2013 | post #1)

George Zimmerman must feel really stupid about now

OK How about some facts??? " seemingly indicting him " He called it a MURDER, now if the president had only said 'tragic death' it would not have seemed that he was indicting Zimmerman.  (Feb 7, 2013 | post #7)

lowest water level on record

'Scientists say lake levels are cyclical and controlled mostly by nature. They began a steep decline in the late 1990s and have usually lagged well below their historical averages since then. But studies have shown that Huron and Michigan fell by 10 to 16 inches because of dredging over the years to deepen the navigational channel in the St. Clair River, most recently in the 1960s. Dredging of the river, which is on the south end of Lake Huron, accelerated the flow of water southward from the two lakes toward Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, and eventually into the Atlantic Ocean. Groups representing shoreline property owners, primarily in Lake Huron's Georgian Bay, have demanded action to slow the Lake Huron and Michigan outflow to make up for losses that resulted from dredging, which they contend are even greater than officials have acknowledged. Although the Army corps produced a list of water-slowing options in 1972, including miniature dams and sills that resemble speed bumps along the river bottom, nothing was done because the lakes were in a period of above-average levels that lasted nearly three decades, Kompoltowicz said.'  (Feb 6, 2013 | post #2)

lowest water level on record

http://news.yahoo. com/2-great-lakes- hit-lowest-water-l evel-record-233716 573.html ' Shippers are taxed to support a harbor maintenance fund, but only about half of the revenue is spent on dredging. The remainder is diverted to the treasury for other purposes. Legislation to change that policy is pending before Congress.'  (Feb 6, 2013 | post #1)
