All wet! Race is on to save historic books after Rockingh...

Spoke to someone at the library today and the insurance is NOT adaquate and will not cover the full cost of replacement of furnishings, repairs and most importantly, restoration to the irreplaceable volumes of local history, which are still in Boston!  (Dec 29, 2010 | post #4)

Chambera s decision to move irks town

Stepping Up, how help? The answers to the questions need to come from the CoC and the Town Selectboard and over a week later, NOTHING further from them. A little transparency would go a long way to open communication here. As I said on the air, these things keep coming out with no resolutions or truths and no one trusts anything that is done anymore here. The money unpaid by the CoC would have mostly covered the $8600.00 given to the Rec Ctr this week to cover running that place Mon-Fri. It just goes on and on and when you see one previously undisclosed issue all come into question.  (Dec 10, 2010 | post #42)

Chambera s decision to move irks town

Of course, we've gotten pretty far off course on the CoC article and I have several questions which I will be bringing up on my radio program on WOOL Thursday.  (Dec 7, 2010 | post #38)

Chambera s decision to move irks town

YES, I am a village dweller no matter what this blog says, it's BELLOWS FALLS. Does anyone on any board listen to private citizens at all when they bring up topics for clarification or make suggestions? Usually boards just let the citizen "get it off their chest" and go on without any more adieu. I am a member of BFDDA, but won't be again, and let me tell you they just wanted my membership money not my help OR opinions. I also worked for the City of Seattle and Public Comment Periods ARE required for every change but ALWAYS IGNORED.  (Dec 7, 2010 | post #37)

Warming shelter in BF approved

I, for one, HAVE committed to some volunteerism for the warming shelter, despite my reservations about it. ONE-it's residents are an unknown and it's positioned right in the residential sector-Red Light Hill,Westminster St-Atkinson St, where children walk to-and-from school. TWO-they already know some of the locals who will utilize the shelter and they have said straight out there is nothing they can do to force them to make some life advances so this is not the annual routine for them. Therefore it is expected that some people will do nothing to change their life situation,no matter how much help is offered to sculpt out an "exit plan" from homelessness. Those of you who think of poverty and homelessness as a disease have no idea how easily it can happen to a family. I do not think it can ever be eradicated, though, because free choice is also part of the human condition. Only the hope that most will not choose it as a lifestyle makes it bearable to see at all.  (Nov 10, 2010 | post #14)

BF business owner buys former Sama s

I'm sorry to add my 2 cents, but Sam's pricing was not in the range of affordability for the lower income levels in town, so they certainly DID NOT cater to all locals. I did shop there from time to time, but my goodness the prices are ridiculous and I certainly don't see how a family of 4 on low income could clothe their family there. So it's off to Keene or Claremont! A business either needs to attract out of town money OR be totally town-utilitarian, like J&H Hardware or Sub-Way,T-Bird,Piz za Palace, VT Pretzel. There are already places to purchase antiques, Oh-Zone for one, which most people dismiss, and the Red Barn. Antiques could also be found at Chris Glennan's place, but it's closed now, so how does that speak to antique businesses in general? More power to the person who has an idea and wishes their idea to succeed. Oh, and isn't the business in the old Fletcher's space of the same ilk?  (Jun 23, 2010 | post #50)

BF trustees seek input on merger

Had to cut off last two paragraphs to fit. Can this too not be talked about? Selectman quits post MacPhee said that since the August primary and November general election are state votes, it would cost the town between $2,000 and $3,000 to print its own ballots and hold a separate election. The board said it would post the vacancy and talk to prospective board members at a future board meeting. MacPhee said potential candidates would be asked to submit a letter outlining their interests and qualifications.  (Jun 17, 2010 | post #115)

BF trustees seek input on merger

Just read this on sentinelsource.com and do not understand why the Reformer articles were not allowed in Topix. Selectman quits post Says anonymous web comments crossed line By Susan Smallheer Rutland Herald Published: Thursday, June 17, 2010 BELLOWS FALLS — Veteran Rockingham Select Board member Robert Thomson resigned from the board earlier this month in protest of anonymous comments posted on the web attacking him and some of his employees, attached to a news story that ran last month in the Brattleboro Reformer. The Rockingham Select Board had hoped to convince Thomson to change his mind, but Tuesday night Select Board Chairman Thomas MacPhee said that he had spoken with Thomson and he was determined. Thomson, who lives in Saxtons River, said Wednesday that “things became too personal” and he resigned to protect his employees and his family’s two businesses, the Inn at Saxtons River, and Bob Thomson Real Estate. “I’m quite comfortable with my decision,” he said. Thomson said the controversy erupted when he and two other Select Board members followed through on plans to lay off some town employees, citing financial constraints facing the town. Some townspeople had successfully added money to the town budget on the floor of Town Meeting in an effort to save the jobs, but the board followed through on the budget reduction plans, Thomson said. “I don’t mind people disagreeing, but when they start dragging my employees and my business into it, that’s where I draw the line,” said Thomson. “The three of us on the board stood by our guns and that’s when it started in with all kinds of nasty things,” he said. The board voted 3-2 to eliminate the jobs of two employees, Public Works Director Everett Hammond and town hall clerk Joanne Perry. The board had earlier said it planned on eliminating the town hall janitor’s job, and that person resigned and found another job. The board says it can save more than $100,000. Thomson said he and others contacted the Brattleboro Reformer about what he considered inaccurate comments, but was told that the Reformer didn’t control the content of the comments section, which is run by a separate company called Topix. The Reformer has a contract with Topix that allows the company to directly link to its stories. Topix does have a tab that allows people to report abuse. “They allow people to put those things under a pseudonym. I think you should put your name. I’ve never been afraid of criticism,” said Thomson, who was re-elected to a three-year term on the Rockingham board in March. “I called the Reformer and asked them to stop the whole thing, but they weren’t listening,” he said. “They allow people to put those things and they started to bring my employees’ names into it ‘this one could be seen doing such and such at the Saxtons River Inn,’ that’s not right,” he said. Thomson said the Reformer-Topix forum encourages “a lot of cowards and a lot of mean-spirited people,” although Thomson said he actually believed that a “very small group” of people were behind the majority of the dozens of comments usually posted about Bellows Falls items. Reformer Managing Editor Tom D’Errico didn’t return a call requesting comment on the issue, but in an earlier letter to the Rockingham board this month, D’Errico noted that he didn’t control the content of the Topix comments despite the partnership with the Reformer. Even D’Errico’s explanation was the subject of anonymous critical comments attacking the Reformer for what people said was a lack of responsibility. The Reformer “has given them a megaphone,” said one person who posted anonymously. Topix.com is based in Palo Alto, Calif., and is jointly owned by The Tribune Co., Gannett Corp., and the McClatchy Co., all news companies. The Rockingham board had refused to accept Thomson’s resignation earlier this month, with all board members saying they hoped Thomson would reconsider.  (Jun 17, 2010 | post #114)

BF man caught on warrant

I can't see the point of picking him up in NH and releasing him on his own in VT. It's "catch-and-re lease". Another chance for him abuse another child or to make good on his promise at the bar, as well as a waste of taxpayer monies, which served no purpose. His next court date isn't until 7/14.  (Jun 17, 2010 | post #4)

Recount sought in BF vote Riccio beats Falzo for village ...

The only real problem with Bellows Falls in the last 30 years is how comfortable it has gotten with being laughed at. As for low-income housing and those who believe it brings poverty and drugs to this community, speak to SLMoore.  (May 21, 2010 | post #54)

Recount sought in BF vote Riccio beats Falzo for village ...

Would like to see a show of hands. How many people criticizing my home village are living in the village and not just passing through and passing judgment? Those of you who live here signify by saying AYE. I have lived in many small and major cities and towns on both coasts and local govts are plagued with petty bs, self-aggrandizing political animals, and poor management. Oversight is slim to none and the bitching just goes on until someone(s) get in there and change it. BF, except for the lack of proximity to a full-serve hospital is just like Windsor,Londonderr y, SPringfield(don't even go on about drugs there), W Brattleboro and most of WRJ  (May 21, 2010 | post #53)

At a time when there is so much to clean up in the Village government; with budget issues unresolved, overspending, etc, it is inappropriate to ask for this merger.  (May 14, 2010 | post #23)

BFUHS prom flap irks board

You don't really need students to breath test, unless there is a suspicion of alcohol presence, and how do you get that? Someone standing at the door as people enter, that's the way it should be. EVERY alcohol smells, and for you folks in denial,EVEN vodka. SO if you smell alcohol they get the breath test. It's not an invasion of privacy, these are students we are talking about, not adults. They are entering a SCHOOL function, created with SCHOOL raised funds. The end. School lockers are opened all the time for suspicion, so therefore suspicion of alcohol violates the sanctity of the school and the Legion's property. If you guys can't smell alcohol then you're either drinking yourself or in denial. Why is it these blogs always get into petty fighting over personalities when that is not the topic?  (May 9, 2010 | post #74)
