You have no idea how fortunate you are. None of mine are... But I have high hopes for my brother's kid-- everytime there is group prayers? I do not bow my head-- I wait quietly while they engage in their silly rituals. I see that he often does the same... eye contact, and a quick grin, and we share a secret-- obviously neither of us thinks the ritual is .. worth honoring. :D  (10 hrs ago | post #17117)

The problem with religion? Is that it purports to have "answers " for which there can never be permitted any questions of any kind. Ever--upon pain of death and worse. That rather shuts down the search for what *really* happened... The non-answer "god did it" utterly destroys any further questions-- usually, enforced by murder.  (10 hrs ago | post #17116)

Then? Pick one of the thousands of different philosophical "answers ". Since it's patently clear there isn't any actual guiding over-arching intelligence? You get to choose which one you like-- most appear to be equally "valid" ... in that the universe does not seem to care one way or another. What with it not being sentient, and all.  (10 hrs ago | post #17115)

Beer is nice. It's literally the driving "engine" that got humans to settle down and invent agriculture. We owe our entire civilization to the art of making beer. :)  (10 hrs ago | post #17114)

Evolution Debate

can anyone explain to me why humans are the only sentient...

LMAO! The young earth idea is 100% crap. There is not one single actual fact, that supports it. Not one. Not a single thing on all the planet, supports an earth less than 4 billion years old. Sorry.  (10 hrs ago | post #100)

Atheism requires as much faith as religion?

False. Testing is a way of measuring thoughts. So is reading, and then reciting what was just read. Thoughts are easily measured. Souls remain entirely fictional--- and only exist in the minds of the deluded.  (10 hrs ago | post #266860)

Atheism requires as much faith as religion?

False. Thoughts are easily measured. Souls do not exist. You lose. Again.  (10 hrs ago | post #266859)

Thoughts can be measured. What are tests in school, but a measure of thoughts? Souls are pure myth-- they only exist in the minds of those who've been deluded.  (10 hrs ago | post #266858)

But also true. Thoughts can be measured-- what are tests in school, but a way to measure thinking? Souls? Are pure myth-- do not exist, apart from delusional brains' imaginations  (10 hrs ago | post #266857)

Yep. His argument is really naive.  (10 hrs ago | post #266856)

To some? It was a Win-Win! They got to combine their love of Movie-star pseudo-importance with politics. Sadly, it was a Dark Time in the US-- our economy tanked due to his incredibly STUPID policies. But even worse? Ronnie-Ray-gun married the GOP to Genuine Christianity¬ô --- and ruined both in the process.  (10 hrs ago | post #266855)

Atheism requires as much faith as religion?

False. Thoughts can be measured quite easily. Using MRI or PET or other modern medical marvels, we can actually see the brain thinking. We can determine which parts of the brain are involved with different brain activity. Thoughts are real. Souls are myth. Sorry, but that's the Fact Jack. In spite of your overblown ego, desperate to be Cosmically Significant to the Greater Universe? You are not.  (10 hrs ago | post #266854)

On My Mind:

politics as an alternative to war, the problem with democracies is that you get EXACTLY what you vote for...

I Believe In:

Optimism. Human Beings. Human Culture. The eventual ability of people to see reason, beyond "scary eyes in the dark beyond the campfire". Humans are at their best, when striving to reach beyond their own self-imposed limitations--especially to help a stranger in need. Humans are at their worst, when thinking THEY are the ONLY person with "the answer".
