Atheism

There's probably no God

Booooogus.... The bible's god and free will cannot coexist. The bible specifically states, that every person (soul) was concieved by it's god before birth (which was planned by that god to the second). The bible then goes on to say that each minute of life is also planned by it's god. On to the very second of death-- also planned by the bible's god. Pretty much eliminates free will.... IF. If the bible were actually true, that is...  (3 hrs ago | post #9533)

Now **why** do you think I refuse the label "atheist " as applied to myself? It is **exactly** because of you religious bigots, re-defining the term into a straw-man that NOBODY qualifies for....! I know of NOBODY who BELIEVES "no god"...! Not even Hitchens and Dawkins claim this!  (3 hrs ago | post #9531)

Oh, now THAT is a crock of horse-exhaust... Believers donate for various reasons-- chiefly, so that they can get a nice fat tax credit. Next, they donate for the same reasons Gates and Buffet do: to get those warm, fuzzy "feel-good " vibes in return. Morality has NOTHING AT ALL to do with it. In any case? The MAJORITY of so-called "charities " rarely get 10% of the donations to the actual causes-- that is, rarely more than $0.10 on every $1.00 goes to the actual charity activity. The rest? Lines the pockets of the charities' administrators, pays for huge, expensive cars, buildings, lighting, etc. Churches are the WORST at this: Typically less than 0.001% of their income goes back out as charitable activity. Most goes to salaries, expenses, lights, gas, water, huge gilt-encrusted buildings, TV ads, literature, support for their "home offices", support for their invaders--er-- "missionaries ", etc. And more and more frequently, and illegally, much is going into the pockets of political parties......! The most notorious was the Mormon church funding HUGE ads in California against the gays. And the most recent, is the coalition of Cat'lick bishops who illegally lobbied Congress about the health care bill. Charities? Not hardly.... ...the TINY amount is not worth the HUGE BURDEN OF EVIL THAT ACCOMPANIES IT.  (3 hrs ago | post #9529)

You **really** think so? Did you TRANSFER the TITLE? You DID? YOU PAID TAXES ON THE SALE, you ignorant dolt! :ROFLYou are SUPPOSED to report it, though. There's even a line in the Federal Income Tax form, for reporting such income. Wait.....I almost forgot: You are a PRACTICING Christian, aren't you? That's right: YOU DO NOT OBEY THE LAW OF THE LAND...! Silly me.... I nearly forgot that fact... (in spite of your Mentor, Jesus admonishing all followers to **pay** taxes faithfully..... ....but I keep forgetting just how much of a hypocrite you Practicing Christians are.... )  (3 hrs ago | post #9526)

The above is just plain garbage. It contributes NOTHING to the argument. It IGNORES THE FACT, that a TRUE god ALWAYS HAS ALTERNATE ACTIONS, THAN MURDER. Period. It is ALSO more of the Might Makes Right crapola.  (3 hrs ago | post #9525)

And? If a GOD commits murder? Is that not the WORST SORT of immorality POSSIBLE? To a GOD-- ANYTHING is possible... ...therefore? To a GOD-- HE DOES NOT HAVE TO COMMIT MURDER AT ALL! He ***always*** has ALTERNATIVE BEHAVIORS THAN MURDER! THIS IS MY POINT!  (3 hrs ago | post #9524)

You ASSume much, here. 1) you ASSume I'm an atheist; I'm not. 2) you ASSume I don't have a moral or ethical code of behavior: I do. 3) you ASSume I do not value life, and human life above other forms of life: I do. 4) Why? Because. 5) My entire argument consisted of this: the evil bible god is an IMMORAL MONSTER, murdering, raping, pillaging, etc. You have FAILED to prove otherwise. You just rant off on an impossible rabbit-trail.  (3 hrs ago | post #9523)

Is 'new atheism' really new?

* hymns is a loose description of the singing they did. Positivism, very nebulous nod to supernatural "forces" , that sort of thing.  (3 hrs ago | post #53)

Atheism

Is 'new atheism' really new?

I'm mostly ignorant, except I've been to a couple of UU funerals, and I was quite impressed. Positivism, remembrance of the person who'd just died, remembering family---that sort of thing. In one case, the barest of nods to an implied supernatural afterlife. In the other, even that was missing. Some affirming poetry, some non-specific hymns*, classical music on the organ. I'm told by some UU friends that their services are similar, but often varied. They tend to invite guest speakers, sometimes who lean heavily to the supernatural. I'd consider going, except for two things: 1) I was forced to wake up at 7am on Sundays for most of my life-- I'm happily done with *that*. 2) I was forced to listen to amateur persuasive speeches for most of that, too. And I'm too tired for such nonsense any longer. 3) (okay--3 things--nobody expec--) Many of the UU congregations are ultra-liberal in their politics-- I mean way left of center. That's a wee bit too far off-center for me.  (3 hrs ago | post #52)

Optimism. Human Beings. Human Culture. The eventual ability of people to see reason, beyond "scary eyes in the dark beyond the campfire". Humans are at their best, when striving to reach beyond their own self-imposed limitations--especially to help a stranger in need. Humans are at their worst, when thinking THEY are the ONLY person with "the answer".
