Should Gay Marriage be outlawed - Online live discussion ...

Click on the following link to join a live chat discussion Wednesday at 11 am http://www.news10. net/news/liveonlin e/default.aspx Opponents of gay marriage say Proposition 8 would restore the traditional meaning of marriage, while opponents of the ballot measure say the state constitution guarantees the same freedoms to everyone, including the right of same-sex couples to marry. If Proposition 8 passes on November 4, the California constitution would be changed to define marriage as only between a man and woman and outlaw gay marriage. Wednesday's Live_Online at 11 a.m. will feature a debate over Proposition 8, with Jennifer Roback Morse with the Yes on 8 campaign and Andrea Jackson with the No on 8 campaign. According to California's Official Voter Guide, supporters of Proposition 8 say "it's not an attack on the gay lifestyle," but about preserving marriage. Supporters say the proposition "doesn't take away any rights or benefits of gay or lesbian domestic partnerships, " and they warn if the initiative doesn't pass, "teachers could be required to teach young children there is no difference between gay marriage and traditional marriage." In their Voter Guide statements, opponents of Proposition 8 say, "regardless of how anyone feels about marriage for gay and lesbian couples, people should not be singled out for unfair treatment under the laws of our state." Opponents say domestic partnerships and marriage are not the same, and that "only marriage provides the security that spouses provide one another." As for teaching young children about gay marriage, opponents say the initiative has nothing to do with schools, and that "no child can be forced, against the will of their parents, to be taught anything about health and family issues."  (Oct 8, 2008 | post #1)
