Culp News-Leader If hunters and anglers formed a corporation, it would be among the nation’s largest companies, ranking No. 11 on the Fortune 500. Sportsmen as a group pour $70 billion annually into the nation’s economy. In Missouri, hunters and anglers spend about $1.4 billion annually, the survey shows. Sportsmen support 22,896 jobs in Missouri. The survey showed that more than 38 million Americans participate in outdoors recreation and support a total of 1.2 million jobs. The number of Americans participating in wildlife activities is up 6 percent since 1991, but the money they’re spending has increased far more. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife survey showed that hunting expenditures are up 29 percent since 1991, while fishing expenditures are up 14 percent, said Sylvia Cabrera, manager of the national survey. • Hunters spent as much money on their special gear each year as Americans spend on Nike shoes and apparel — $4.6 billion. • Each year, hunters spend more than $2 billion for food for hunting trips — more than Americans spend on Domino’s pizza. • The $2.4 billion in annual federal income tax revenue generated by hunters’ spending could cover 200,000 U.S. Army salaries. • Sport fishing generates more in revenues annually than U.S. commercial seafood landings. Sporting anglers generate $36 billion compared to commercial fishing’s $3.7 billion. • More jobs are supported by sport fishing than the number of people employed by General Motors, Ford and Exxon-Mobile.  (Monday Dec 14 | post #460)
