Why inner city schools fail

You said what I have been trying to say, but you did it better!  (Oct 31, 2008 | post #159)

Why inner city schools fail

Just to set the record straight, I said "self impowerment", not <self improvement>  (Oct 31, 2008 | post #158)

Man arrested after head-on crash

I wonder how many "suspended licenses" we meet on the road every day! It's kinda scary.  (Oct 31, 2008 | post #1)

Mark, what you are ignoring is the dynamic of self-impowerment. Vouchers will give them power. It isn't wise to completely dismiss vouchers just because you 'think' it won't work. We know the present system doesn't work, and some of us are pretty sure the voucher system will work. Isn't it worth a try?! Do we want to continue in the abysmal swamp we are in? I've had as many negative experiences in public education as you have, but it only makes me want to try something to improve it! Vouchers are our best hope right now.  (Oct 31, 2008 | post #153)

There hasn't been an answer to this question, but I guess we know the answer. There has not been one change and there won't be because there is no incentive for change. Vouchers would be a monstrous incentive.  (Oct 27, 2008 | post #118)

Vouchers would do more than have children change schools. Vouchers would result in real innovation, not just shuffling the same methods and materials around. Education doesn't have to cost so much. Education doesn't have to be in a classroom. Education doesn't require a teacher with a Masters degree. Education doesn't have to plod on at the same rate for everyone. Some kids could learn in a few years what others learn in 16 years. Why waste their time? Education doesn't require a school bus when we could have education delivered locally via the internet. Education and gainful employment do not have to be separate. Where did we get the idea that gainful employment is bad for kids? The workplace is an education in itself, it is reality! Vouchers would encourage radical change, and radical change is what is needed!  (Oct 22, 2008 | post #44)

Teachers picket, GRPS administrators fire back

We attempted that. Remember the Noah Webster Academy in Ionia? It never got off the ground because the state wouldn't fund it. Can you guess why? The MEA stopped it. It threatened the status quo for their members and the MEA leadership. There is an answer to this: School Vouchers! You will see a change almost instantly.  (Oct 21, 2008 | post #64)

If those same parents were given control of the education money you would discover they really do care but right now they are helpless. By giving them a voucher, you put them in the driver's seat. Just because you are poor doesn't mean you don't care.  (Oct 21, 2008 | post #21)

I will wager that if the education money were given to the parents in the form of a voucher there would be change in the blink of an eye. The parents need that control to really become involved in their children's education. The MEA does not want change. I know. I was an MEA representative.  (Oct 21, 2008 | post #20)

The only way you will see positive results in Grand Rapids Public Schools is to give the parents their money in the form of a voucher, and let the parents decide at which school they will spend that money. Then you will see how creative educators can be.  (Oct 21, 2008 | post #4)

Not necessarily. SUV's tip and roll easily. Don't think you are safe just because you drive an SUV.  (Oct 12, 2008 | post #23)

One person dead in Allegan motorcycle accident

I am completely sympathetic with the bikers. It' fun and it's their right, but we know now that there will always be a problem with cars and trucks. I think the only way for a biker to protect himself is to go a bit slower at intersections, and don't assume the other drivers see you.  (Oct 12, 2008 | post #50)

Report: State failed teen in fire death

It doesn't matter how much you rant and rave, or how much money the legislature throws at the problem, crazy things like this are going to happen. People vary widely in their ability to deal with these difficult situations in life, and sometimes they just plain run off the track. Who knows how many children are being subjected to similar atrocities right now? This is one atrocity our society despises, but abortion is OK. If a mother abandons a newly born baby it is terrible, if a doctor killed the baby two days earlier it would be OK. Who can make sense out of all this? Is there any hope for justice? Is there anyone who really cares about justice. Does it help to point fingers and blame everyone? Perhaps if everyone was more concerned about keeping their own life in order we would see less of this craziness. Gloom, Despair, and Agony on me!  (Oct 11, 2008 | post #25)
