Immigration - Belmont, NC

Illegals utilize public healthcare paid for with YOUR tax dollars via local health departments. Illegals are just as it states - ILLEGAL. Either abide by the law established in this country or get out. Many people here have stated our ancestors were illegals, this is not true. Immigration laws were not established when this country was first settled. I think it is great if someone wants to enter the greatest country in the world legally. If not, arrest and deport. Just my 2 cents and you have every right to disagree. But if you disagree, let all the illegals come live with you and you support them.  (Dec 24, 2010 | post #17)

Public Works

I thought the land behind Sammy's was involved in some land swap deal with the City and some other entity. Is that not going to happen?  (Jul 17, 2010 | post #11)

I would like to see answers to the above quote. I see a lot of words but no facts.  (May 30, 2010 | post #5)

Gaston police chief chooses computers over officers

I guess all the wisdom on topix has decided that BFD does not need a boat. Hope none of you need the services of the BFD on the water. Remember you decided it was not needed. It still amazes me at the lack of knowledge that people possess about the government for which they pay for.  (May 30, 2010 | post #25)

OK, so you don't think the BFD needs a boat. Lets use an example of a car going off the bridge on HWY 74. Your only child is trapped in that car. Belmont FD does not have a boat so they wait for another agency to bring a boat to respond to the victim. It only takes 15 minutes for the boat to get to the scene. What is 15 minutes going to matter? RIGHT? Almost everyone can hold their breath for 15 minutes. If technology (software) or hardware (boats/trucks) can help save a life, then it would be a good investment. If the city can afford the cost.  (May 29, 2010 | post #12)

Belmont Budget

My assumption was that an operating mill FULL of equipment is worth more from a tax perspective than an empty building sitting idle. Lowes and wally world did add sales tax revenue/property tax but I could not speak to the level of tax revenue that is generated. I think it is time for all government, city, state and federal government to cut back. As each person or business knows you cannot spend more than you make yet all governments seem to think that is acceptable. State and local not so much as the feds.  (May 19, 2010 | post #21)

Belmont Budget

Most folks don't know how much revenue was produced from water usage/treatment by textile mills. I have never reviewed the numbers but my guess would be the textile mills paid for all water produced by the water plant. Property tax on an operating business is much higher than on a vacant building. Not sure about this one but believe it to be true. A percentage of sales tax is returned to the city for sales inside the city. Two car dealerships left Belmont that once sold a large volume of cars. So with all the downtown business (which is GREAT) the city of Belmont still needs business which will utilize large volumes of city services.  (May 18, 2010 | post #16)

Business has plans for three new restaurants

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. And you know what they say about opinions. If you do not like what is ongoing in Belmont, feel free to invest your money in Downtown and do whatever you choose to do. Downtown is more populated with business and people than it has been since the 70's. Please visit the other area retail districts in surrounding towns and report back how they are doing.  (May 11, 2010 | post #6)

Will Belmont rail become a trail?

Watch for the trolley. Listen for the bell. It is coming. And as far as costs. Our government is trying everything it can to get cars off the road. Do you have any idea how much the feds would grant to get this up and running. If a trolley was to pickup riders in the lot behind the General Store and take them into Downtown Charlotte (I know -lots to work out to make that happen) each morning, this would take cars off the road. And think about Panthers games, Bobcats games and all the other things that occur in Charlotte. Park in Belmont, EAT in Belmont, ride the trolley into Charlotte. I think it is a great idea for Belmont and the citizens of Belmont.  (May 11, 2010 | post #39)

Belmont Abbey Athletics Program hits rock bottom

And I am SURE this has NOTHING at all to do with the wonderful administration at the Abbey. I guess the entire school will need to hit rock bottom before a change is made. Such a shame.  (May 11, 2010 | post #3)

Coupons

several people I know take the coupons to work and then swap with others at work. Coupons are a great way to save. I had someone tell me they spent 1 hour a week cutting, sorting coupons and they saved 57.00 at the grocery store. 57 bucks an hour is pretty good if you ask me.  (Apr 30, 2010 | post #5)

I'm sorry - this is too funny!

I would assume you consider the selling of a mortgage that someone can't afford marketing also. I assume you consider the banks being bailed out by uncle sam cause "we are going to fold" if you don't help us (yet the executives got 6 figure plus bonuses) marketing. I call it lying, it is your privilege to call it whatever you choose. Just don't expect me to agree with you. And YES I know I am probably off topic. Sorry, I could not hold back on this one.  (Apr 29, 2010 | post #10)
