States lag in push to curb smoking

True, of course the attitude we continue to hear over and over here in WI is that "everybody else is doing it, so we need to also!!" I think they're just afraid of not being "cool" in the eyes of the supposedly "progressive " states. Bunch of spineless losers.  (Jul 21, 2008 | post #2)

Middleton smoking ban OK'd, will start next March

And this means what? Oh, that we're a democracy and have to bend the majority? Wrong. We're not a democracy, and I'm sick to death of people forgetting that and misconstruing the idea. Our country was built to protect people from majority (mob) rule. Laws and regulations were never supposed to be allowed to be put into place at the whim of the majority. If that were the case, the spirit of the foundation of this country wouldn't have been one of individual rights; rather it would have been based on mob rights and majority rule. Instead we had protection built in to shelter the minority populations from being overrun or harmed by others. Smoking bans are an egregious violation of this concept as they rely completely on mob rule and coercion through the spread of pro-majority propaganda. I will assume from your words and from your tone (and the fact that you're in madison) that you know nothing about history, so I'm not going to challenge your narrow scope of the world, but suffice to say that majority rule and manipulation through mass hysteria has been used to do some pretty nasty things over the years. Yet, here you are, preaching from your little soapbox in madison as if you know best. Well, Jeff, you can stay in madison and have your miserable little home (and yes, I say miserable because every time I go to madison I am amazed that nobody smiles or looks at all content in life)... Just leave the rest of Wisconsin alone. We don't want you or your kind. You're a traitor to your own state, and as far as I am concerned, a traitor to the spirit of this country. I would recommend that you do something useful with your life for a change, but I suspect that you already firmly believe that the world does in fact revolve around you and that you're such an asset to society that the thought of us functioning without you seems like a sick joke. So, whatever. Enjoy life with your head up your ass. I prefer the light of day myself.  (Jul 17, 2008 | post #18)

And for those who are willing to read a report that wasn't sponsored by "big tobacco" or "big pharma" or "big cancer" or "big lung" ... Here's a report that I wrote regarding toxicity and health where SHS is concerned: http://banthebanwi sconsin.com/Docume nts/health%20impli cations%20v5.pdf  (Jul 16, 2008 | post #20)

You can show me research. I read everything that comes across my desk. I actually have a hard copy of the surgeon general's report sitting on one of my shelfs at home. It's par for the course considering I run a smokers rights nonprofit. However, I have never seen evidence that supports either argument, so with that in mind I err on the side of rights, not restrictions. I'm not going to say that SHS is healthy. I'm not going to say it's toxic either. I have studied tox reports of all sorts of different substances, many of which are in SHS, and on average the toxins in SHS are almost non existent compared to the background chemical composition in outdoor air. So to claim that SHS is harming you outdoors is a complete fallacy. Every time a car drives past you're exposed to doses of the same chemicals in much higher doses than even if you were to sit in a smoke-filled bar and inhale deeply. I mean, do you know what it is that you're saying? Do you know what the chemicals are that you're fighting against? Most, if not all, are naturally occurring natural chemicals that can be found in all sorts of common places. Burning ANYTHING that gives off smoke in some form releases certain chemicals that are nearly standard - especially where burning natural materials (i.e. plants, trees etc) are concerned. So for you to stand there and preach about data and research and how you're not going to change my mind blah blah blah. Who's kidding who here?  (Jul 16, 2008 | post #19)

None of you hard-liners have answered the question at hand. Prove that somebody smoking outdoors has an adverse affect on somebody else's health and warrants legislative action to control it. Simple. Prove it.  (Jul 16, 2008 | post #10)

We'll soon clear air with smoking ban

I see nothing wrong with seat belts, however I think that seat belt laws are a really bad idea and set a really bad precedence. It's just like helmet laws. Why does anybody think that people need to be forcibly saved from their decisions? If people choose to do things that have no impact on another person, why the hell does anybody think that they need to interfere and regulate?  (Jul 16, 2008 | post #75)

Who's tobacco company funded? Why is that the only argument that people like you can come up with? Whenever you don't have a good comeback, the first thing out of your traps is "tobacco company funding!" which somehow makes it ok to disregard those things that you disagree with?  (Jul 16, 2008 | post #74)

Fear of quitting is a powerful force

This sort of thing is expected from the health care crowd. It's when they overstep their bounds and try to force this crap down our throats by way of government that I get mad. The doctors and medical personnel can say whatever they want, start their little clubs and programs and try to encourage people to quit all they want. I'm OK with that. But it needs to end right there. Once these people started abusing their power and position to manipulate government into forcing their crusade on the rest of us, it became less about medicine and more about power and control.  (Jul 16, 2008 | post #2)

What??? You ignorant boob, I'm not sure who told you what and why you would choose to believe it, but a baby cannot be born with LUNG DAMAGE from a mother smoking! Quit trying to use the pathetic sympathy pull to try to win people over to your side. It's disgusting. Furthermore, this simply proves that you have no 'effn idea what you're saying (assuming you believe it and aren't just blithering on).  (Jul 16, 2008 | post #42)

Opinion: SPIN ALERT!

And furthermore, I wasn't going to make this personal, but now I feel I have to because I'm really pissed off. ur so teh gehy (what the hell kind of name is that anyway?), you are a child. I have read your comments here and you sound like a bratty toddler who's not getting his way. Now that you have to contend with differing opinions, you have gone off a told mommy how big, bad arclight isn't playing fair. Grow up, pal. Seriously. If you have a beef, take it up with me. Don't go off and tattle you big baby. Jesus, no wonder we're in the mess we're in around here! We're surrounded by a bunch of whining brats who are too cowardly to deal with things on their own so they run to a higher authority, be it the Topix crew or government, to try and have them fix things so they can be "perfect " for you again. Well ya know what, this is exactly why people like me get involved. If you have so much to bitch about, then YOU become an editor and handle this along with me. Ah, but that would take responsibility and a little bit of intellectual fortitude, wouldn't it? Something you are sorely lacking in. In fact, here's a better idea. Why don't YOU write some opinion pieces and post them? That way nobody can say that things aren't FAIR. Because that's what it's all about, isn't it? Fair. Go kiss off, man. You're a blight on society and an embarrassment to the rest of us nonsmokers.  (Jul 13, 2008 | post #5)

Opinion: SPIN ALERT!

It's not news, genius, in fact it's even titled as "Opinion. " To that point, I will happily put any stories anybody asks me to put up. However, since the actual "news" articles are very one-sided, I am forced to take news and opinions from other places to present both sides. Are you guys too obtuse to catch on, or are you simply pissed off that there is another side of the story being presented? Besides you cranky a-hole, in case you hadn't noticed the majority of what I post IS actual news, and almost always promotes your happy little view of reality. If you take issue with having more than one opinion stated, then you can go elsewhere!  (Jul 13, 2008 | post #4)
