US Jewish criticism of Trump expands to some supporters

Agreed. But perhaps the authorities in Charlottesville should have done a better job of keeping distance between the two factions. It was a powder keg to begin with. When dealing with groups like Neo-Nazis and the KKK, it's obvious there can be no dialogue and compromise with such people. Ditto the Antifa crowd. The part that is getting disturbing is that even people not aligned with any of those maggoty groups have dug in their heels and refuse to compromise on ANYTHING with the other side. Just your standard middle of the road conservatives and regular middle of the road liberals won't even sit down and try to discuss policy with logic, reason and an eye toward compromise. Which was exactly the state of things in 1860. And we know what that led to. We need logical and reasonable people, left and right, who don't make decisions based on pure emotion, to start denouncing ideological extremists across the board. Or else we're in big trouble.  (Aug 19, 2017 | post #41)

Mitch McConnell's secret fury over Charlottesville respon...

Cherry-picking history does no one any good. Perhaps a healthy compromise, like moving statues and monuments to museums, Confederate cemeteries and actual Civil War battlefields is the proper way to go. But that would involve compromise, and as a nation we don't appear able or willing to do so anymore. And all that does is fire up both right wing and left wing extremists. From the country's founding to 1860, we survived on compromise. By Lincoln's election, the extremists on both ends of the spectrum dug in their heels, refused to compromise, and 600,000+ Americans died because of it. I sure would hate to see that kind of carnage again. But we all know the old historical cliche, "those who do not learn from history, are condemned to repeat it."  (Aug 17, 2017 | post #28)

Yup! We've allowed a line to be crossed, and there's no turning the tide now. And crap like this only makes the other side's extremist more demonstrably batshit crazy. It's going to get ugly, I think.  (Aug 17, 2017 | post #6)

Mississippi holds on to state flag with Confederate symbol

The state flag of Hawaii features the British Union Jack in the upper left quadrant. American soldiers died from 1775 to 1783 fighting the British Army, who marched under that same Union Jack. Is any one grievously offended? Is anyone throwing a temper tantrum? No, of course not. Too many of our citizens, left and right, have become so hyper-sensitive and emotionally fragile that it's now beyond ridiculous. You're a homophobe and don't like the rainbow flag? Tough s**t, grow a pair and deal with it! The sight of a statue of a long dead Confederate soldier or a cloth Mississippi flag buckles your knees and makes you tremble? Tough s**t, deal with it! It's lunacy! I remember 10 or 12 years ago, all of these Italian-American organizations were up in arms over "The Sopranos". They wanted HBO to cancel the series, they organized boycotts, they were soooo offended. And as a fellow Italian- American, I shook my head at these childish clowns, and thought "Hey, dummy....that little black rectangle with buttons that's in your hand? It's called a TV remote....CHANGE THE CHANNEL AND WATCH SOMETHING ELSE!!!" It's the same principle. If you don't like the Rainbow flag, don't fly it! It can't hurt you. The statue of the dead Confederate guy, more than likely covered in pigeon shit, that you walked passed thousands of times without giving it a second thought? Again, it's a statue. It can do you no physical or financial harm! For our own survival, we really need to mentally toughen up. More thinking with our brains and less reacting to our emotions. We're on a slippery slope, and the incline is getting steeper. Only through reason will the left and the right find common ground, and start getting this place in some semblance of order again. And that's the surest way of marginalizing and eventually eradicating groups like the KKK, the Neo-Nazis and the Antifa extremists. But if we keep getting the raw emotions of the ideological extremes and keep giving in to the over sensitivity over everything, we are done as a nation.  (Aug 17, 2017 | post #3)

True, to an extent. The extreme wing od the Democrat Party is doing the same thing, however. Compromise has disappeared from the national discourse. And it will be our undoing.  (Aug 16, 2017 | post #10)
