Thank you for your input Big Time, its nice to meet you. I understand that by being here I will read all types of opinions, including many that I will not agree with. It’s not so much that I even tend to mind the everyday garden variety trolls/socks being around, many times they simply provide off the wall humor. I have issues with the ones that seem obsessed with the idea of shutting down a thread, or the harassment of posters just to get them to stop posting. I have read time and again where a good poster simply says, “that’s it, I have had enough” and left a thread due to harassment. I understand that we each have the right to express our opinions, but that does not mean that it gives one the right to go overboard and blatantly harass another into leaving. Many times when I see someone being picked at I will send them a t-mail letting them know that they are just dealing with a sock/troll, sometimes it helps the situation, other times not so much. I am trying to find a way to lessen the impact of the malicious ones, and perhaps that is just not possible. I was thinking that if we shine a bit of light on them, perhaps they will scatter like cockroaches, leaving only the garden variety troll’s behind when they find a new place to pester.  (Nov 26, 2012 | post #64)

Hello BT42, thank you for reading along and giving your input. To be honest in the past I relied on the regular posters that I enjoy reading, to point out the socks and trolls so that I could just ignore them. On one of the threads, someone started pointing out all the different sock names that one poster was using, along with the verbiage that was giving him away. When the 5th or 6th name was added to the list, I started thinking that the person naming the sock was wrong. Possibly even trying to make the other person look bad. That is when I started paying attention. I realized that the person naming the sock was not making it up, and I went on to think that they probably could add another name or two onto the list. That got me questioning what make’s someone create all those accounts? Is it simply a game to disrupt, or does that person actually have some major personality issues?  (Nov 26, 2012 | post #60)

What if they cling and you find yourself out of bounce? LOL just kidding! I am still trying to understand the mindset of someone that chooses to create an army of socks so they can sling mud at the wall and not have to clean up the bloomin’ mess….. <<Pulls a Mr. Clean magic eraser out of the cupboard and smiles>> You think I will get in trouble since the name has magic in it? ;)  (Nov 16, 2012 | post #37)

On Topix, how can one determine who is a troll and who is just an odd poster? Some seem to only disagree with others, but as you continue reading their posts there seems to be a sense of and imbalanced balance. Their story always seems to stay the same, yet they are completely bipolar to everyone else on the thread. (Examples being folks such as Yellowdog and Waaasssuuup.)  (Nov 16, 2012 | post #33)

I found this site very informative: http://computer.ho wstuffworks.com/tr oll.htm (below is an excerpt from the site) The very nature of the Internet might contribute to trollish behavior. The Internet gives people the opportunity to remain anonymous. That means the average user has very little sense of accountability while online. It's easy to forget (or ignore) the fact that on the other end of the connection is a real human being with real feelings. Trolls sometimes make fun of their own motives. In the Encyclopedia Dramatica, a very popular wiki in troll culture, there's an entry that claims that the American Psychiatric Association will include "Internet troll personality disorder" in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The entry then goes on to list the "diagnostic criteria" for the disorder -- many of which paint trolls in a positive light. Elsewhere on the Web is what appears to be a scholarly paper written by an "Amy Dhala" about a supposed focus group study of trolls. But while much of the paper contains language that on the surface appears legitimate, there are entire sections that drop the scholarly voice completely. It becomes clear by the end of the paper that the entire work is a piece of fiction -- written by a troll. The very nature of trolls makes them difficult to peg down. When are they being deceptive? Do they believe they are online vigilantes and guardian angels, or are they selfishly exploiting others for their own enjoyment? How many are teenagers or younger? It's impossible to know for sure, though that doesn't stop people from making guesses and generalizations.  (Nov 15, 2012 | post #29)

Posts 17-19 I personally posted, and they have been removed from the thread. They gave some information I had found online when it comes to the understanding of Trolls - the reason why I started this thread. It listed the writers opinion of Trolls, their characteristics and behavior patterns. I also included links to the original site to give the writer credit. I am wondering why Trolls and Socks can cuss and carry on, but for some reason when an honest person is trying to dissect them and shed a little light on the subject….the posts are removed by Topix? I am completely flummoxed by this.  (Nov 15, 2012 | post #23)

I can not find any recent articles on the psychology behind a Sock/Troll. If anyone could provide a link to a newer study this would be appreciated.  (Nov 15, 2012 | post #20)

It shouldn't be hard to match up these stupid socks.

I Believe In:

The Trolls right to remain silent, since they don't have a point. Throwing out old socks when they are ruined beyond repair. The right of the people that do not have personality disorders to have intelligent conversations, without the background blathering of nasty little Socks and Trolls.
