\"I'm panicking\"; Gulf Coast residents fear the worst as...

the three people who don't have cars can use their cells phones to call for help. As to the elderly, maybe this time we can expect the govt of New Orleans to do something other than blame everyone else for its inaction.  (Aug 28, 2008 | post #10)

When you say Republican, what do you think of?

your image is running afoul of reality, or vice versa. Hard to tell simply by looking who is in which party. I suspect your father today would be termed a Reagan Democrat if not an outright Republican. I mean, what self respecting Dem would work for an evil, greedy multinational like GE? Haven't seen it, but I hear Mad Men is pretty good viewing.  (Aug 28, 2008 | post #30)

When you say Republican, what do you think of?

who knew Ted Kennedy was a Republican. Thomas, Thomas, Thomas. Both sides have their share of fat cats. In fact, one of the worries in Denver this week was a limo shortage for carting all the liberals.  (Aug 28, 2008 | post #27)

LSU looks to exploit ASU's weaknesses

they keep going till someone scores and unlike the NFL, each team gets a shot. There are no ties anymore. It's not a 'what if' question.  (Aug 28, 2008 | post #11)

Officials may evacuate New Orleans as Gustav nears

even more telling than the coverage was how the locals handled it. In Iowa, they all pitched in with sandbag crews and other means of self-sufficiency. In New Orleans, they waited for someone else to do something. This time around, can we say no excuses? The storm is coming; plenty of warning for you to leave. Otherwise, have a plan for own safety.  (Aug 27, 2008 | post #7)

McCain and the Clown

sounds like a good compilation of facts which, as you know, have little value with the left.  (Aug 27, 2008 | post #2)

LSU won't treat ASU like no-names

LSU isn't Michigan and the SEC isn't the Big 10. App exploited the central weakness surrounding Big 10 schools - a lack of speed. It shows up whenever they play teams that have it. App will give LSU a game for a while but superior depth and speed will wear down the Mountaineers. biggest opportunity for ASU will be to exploit the inexperience of LSU's quarterback. The starter remains undecided but, for either guy, it will be his first time under center. Regardless, it's a good measuring stick for App and after a Saturday night in Baton Rouge, any roadtrip in the SoCon will be much easier.  (Aug 27, 2008 | post #5)

Predators run the show, and the middle class melts down

let's see, Jim has a job as an opinion shaper with the local newspaper, a platform from which he can extol the nation's virtues, point out how far America has come in its relatively short history, remind his readers that this still remains the single most successful experiment in self-governance in the history of the world. We have the world's largest economy, its strongest military, the world's envy, and we remains the preferred relocation spot for the poor huddled masses. Instead of that, however, Jim chooses to wallow in the "woe is me" mentality so prevalent among too many. It's a mindset that is also the centerpiece of hte Democrat Party what with all the wondrous things Obama is going to do for us. This nation became what it is by doing for itself, not waiting for some bureaucracy to be its daddy. Self reliance, initiative, and risk taking are why millions have flocked here and it's why they continue to come. No one shows up because of the magnanimity of imperial Washington. They come here because all things possible, something our good buddy Jim should be aware of.  (Aug 27, 2008 | post #10)

Mills raid a good thing

ever reliable Chuck. Makes sense for a few sentences but quickly swerves into familiar territory - this time, illegal immigration is Bush's fault. He alone, in Chuck's view has failed to secure the borders. All the Dems who support open and unfettered immigration apparently have no role in this mess. It took two parties to gum it up, Chuck. And stop with the legalese parsing of the Constitution. The document applies to the CITIZENS who live under it, not folks who disregard our laws and make no attempt to be part of society.  (Aug 27, 2008 | post #39)

McCain uses POW status as an excuse....

and what is Obama's public sector resume? Let's see, he's been a community organizer, whatever that is and a professor at a university. Try a better argument for someone who spent 15 unremarkable minutes in the US Senate preceded by a few unremarkable years in the Illinois State Senate, an unremarkable period as a law professor, and not much of a record as the aforementioned organizer. You need a better measuring stick that public sector performance.  (Aug 27, 2008 | post #29)

Easley says Obama can win North Carolina

the very same, the same guy who has given politicians a bad name. With friends like him, Obama needs new friends.  (Aug 27, 2008 | post #20)

9-year-old boy told he's too good to pitch

hard to say which is more disturbing - the little league parents who want to sideline this kid or the folks posting here in agreement. Life is a competitive sport and your kids' feelings will survive the trauma of striking out. You'll know you have a good one on your hands when failure motivates him/her to do better. Instead of coddling and excuses, spend some time to help your child improve. So he won't make the majors. Big deal. Neither will 99% of the other players, including most of those who make the all-star team. Competitive sports are about much more than how many hits you got or how many points you scored. Once again, we have folks firmly entrenched in the business of discouraging negligence, if not glorifying mediocrity. I wasn't the best athlete, but it sure was fun and I learned not just which sports I was best suited for but also what to improve upon in the ones where natural talent was limited. So did many of you. What in the world happened between the time baby boomers were kids and when they became parents.  (Aug 26, 2008 | post #25)

Edwards' wife criticized for silence on affair

Edwards' wife criticized for silence on affair

if she didn't know, and the timeline suggests otherwise, than he's an even bigger prick. He uses her illness as a campaign prop, carries on behind her back, and is plenty happy to have her campaigning. I have no ill will toward her and hope her battle with cancer goes as well as it can. He, however, is a much different story.  (Aug 26, 2008 | post #53)

Kennedy, Michelle Obama make case

I agree with you about the rebate; a foolish waste of money. I also agree that Bush abandoned conservative principle, at least on the budget. However, I have to part regarding your cause and effect on the tax cuts. Tax cuts need to be balanced with spending controls, and Bush hasfailed miserably on that. With some spending discipline, the impact of the tax cuts would have been magnified even further. I favor lower taxation, perhaps first and foremost economically followed closely by disciplined spending. Not all conservatives, not even most, are against govt, just against BIG govt pretending that it knows better than the rest of us how to spend our money.  (Aug 26, 2008 | post #68)
