Commissioners ban businesses while reviving zoning law

The 14 types of businesses are adult entertainment, amusement parks, asphalt plants, chip mills (not sawmills), concrete plants, hazardous waste facilities, incinorators, junkyards, landing strips, mines, moter sports facilities, outdoor shooting ranges, slaughterhouses and solid waste facilities. They were not all mentioned. Also, I believe decietfully, the paper reported the moritorium as currently enacted when they actually scheduled a public hearing on the moritorium for Friday, April 3rd, giving entrepeneurs a 10 day window of opportunity to start any of the above businesses subject to other nonzoning regulations.  (Mar 25, 2009 | post #14)

A look inside the mind of a teacher

Teahcers and schools pollute the planet by helping parents and thus encouraging parenthood often at the expense of childless taxpayers. They also enable students to burn more fossil fuels than uneducated people do. competitive sports programs actively encourage bullys and compulsory attendance holds bullying victims captive.  (Sep 21, 2008 | post #1)

Local input charts best path for I-26 Connector

If we can delay the project long enough, there won't be enough gas to fill the current highway anyway.  (Sep 21, 2008 | post #1)

Graffiti is not art - it's simply vandalism

Graffiti is very good for making housing more affordable and stopping gentrification, as are recent economic developments. HOORAY!  (Sep 21, 2008 | post #3)

URTV seems to favor GOP over Democratic Party

URTV has steep membership and training fees (about $130)to support their extravagant equipment and facilities. So far Republican activists have been more willing and able to fork up the dough to get on the air than Democrats have.  (Sep 21, 2008 | post #10)

We shouldn't kill off the uniqueness our citizens cherish

Downtown has a critical shortage of housing and lodging that is causing gentrification and sprawl to an extent that easily takes priority over elitist architectural tastes. The only legitimate complaint is the parking garage and that only because it displaces additional potential housing or lodging.  (Sep 19, 2008 | post #1)

McCain/Palin not really a pair of 'pro-lifers'

So why don't YOU, breckenridge, ask Asheville and Buncombe to stop abortions, pollution, and high school taxes by funding contraception? Why am I the ONLY one to do that? NC has to deal with Murphy voters and Washington with Alabama voters, but Asheville doesn't, so it's ASHEVILLE that must stop abortions with contraception funding, not the state or feds.  (Sep 18, 2008 | post #28)

Witnesses: Officer beat man

Not having the warrent with him strikes me as a technicality, especially IF he had a copy, which I didn't see, but beating the man and threatening witnesses is far from it. And it was just some guy who claimed waiting for backup might be dangerous, I don't believe that for a minute. Don't forget for a minute that jails have very few civilian witnesses, so that once he submits he cannot verify, and that is a big part of the problem.  (Sep 18, 2008 | post #62)

Haywood, Transylvania name Teachers of the Year

Teachers pollute the environment by subsidizing overpopulation at the expense of childless taxpayers. Plus they cause pollution because educated people burn more fossil fuels than uneducated people.  (Sep 18, 2008 | post #2)

CVS to close downtown store

CVS is based in Rhode Island and I trust Rhode Islanders to provide contraception reliably far more than I do local or Arkansas owners, even my 4th cousin out in Robbinsville. As much as "progressives " yak about local ownership, I really value having a cultural bit of Rhode Island values in the area and support it whenever I get hungry downtown as it is also about the only affordable thing to eat there. They are being driven out by zoning induced commercial rents, just like so many of their patrons. It's funny how two imported values can clash with each other, but the I guess I'm no stranger to it.  (Sep 18, 2008 | post #30)

Design company renovates teacher's lounges

Public schools pollute the environment because educated people use more fossil fuels than uneducated people and because it exploits childless taxpayers thus subsidizing overpopulation. They also subsidize bullying with competititve sports programs which are often forced.  (Sep 18, 2008 | post #1)

Witnesses: Officer beat man

If police duty was like jury duty, with laws subject to jury nullification, we would have a lot less of this hot headedness. The basic problem is that patient, nonauthoritarian people rarely want to be cops, so the towns are left with nothing but authoritarian hotheads like this among their applicants. Fixing it would require either a police draft, like jury duty, or so much money that nobody could resist and the employers could pick anyone they wanted. Training doesn't help because going through training requires motivation and the only thing providing the motivation is authoritarianism, which is exactly what we need to screen out. Anyway, the pepper spray might have been justified if he didn't know backup was coming, but the beating clearly wasn't. The cop should be fired. Another thing that cop needed though was civilian auxiliary backup, enough to wrestle the guy into cuffs, and enough of them so that one or two would happen to be around.  (Sep 18, 2008 | post #44)

McCain/Palin not really a pair of 'pro-lifers'

Life begins before conception because sperm are alive, should we bring all of them to term? If women had enough "pie" to bring all their babies to term, the environment would be destroyed far faster than with offshore drilling etc. Only contraception can prevent abortion.  (Sep 18, 2008 | post #21)

AC-T backs education, so why carry Mallard Fillmore?

I was "forced by the school systems to participate in competitive sports" thousands of times, and am forced to fund them to this day.  (Sep 17, 2008 | post #5)
