School doors glued shut

The article says this is not believed to be a senior prank. How is this *not* a senior prank? Seriously.  (May 29, 2009 | post #22)

Church of Scientology Banned from Editing Wikipedia

I've heard this story as well. It may be apocryphal. The other author (in the version I heard) was Robert A. Heinlein. Amusingly, in one of Heinlein's books you could find the quip: "One man's religion is another man's belly laugh".  (May 29, 2009 | post #56)

FDA Calls Breakfast Cereal Cheerios a Drug

You know, reading the article, it looks to me like someone at the FDA is trying to inject a little humor into a legitimate complaint against General Mills. I doubt anyone would argue that whole-grain cereals aren't better for you than processed starch flakes covered in sucrose. But the claims Cheerios has been making in the last two years - even if mainly true - do seem to be making drug-like claims.  (May 16, 2009 | post #145)

Woman steals 500 lbs of gold, piece by piece, over 6 years

Not really. What reading I've done on hoarding types of OCD seem to indicate the the hoarder is doing so because they believe what they're hoarding is valuable. They've convinced themselves that it's value far outweighs any consequences of the hoarding. I'm certainly no expert, but it seems reasonable to me. Seems like it'd be pretty easy to convince yourself of overriding value with something like gold. Still, I don't think OCD is going to get her off on an insanity plea. She still knew she was stealing and that stealing is illegal and immoral.  (May 3, 2009 | post #20)

Busted for Sex on Windsor Castle Lawn, Couple Fears Firing

So, once, long ago, I was with a girlfriend under the banyan tree in front of the Honolulu Zoo having a picnic when she brought my attention to another couple, also having picnic (it used to be a popular spot for that sort of thing). Their picnic included some things we'd chosen to leave out. Like having sex there in public in front of everyone. It's an amusing story, now. It was less amusing at the time. So, I thought I'd never actually see that one topped. I was wrong.  (May 3, 2009 | post #6)

Woman steals 500 lbs of gold, piece by piece, over 6 years

So, they mention she may have an obsessive control disorder in the article. Then they say she kept all the gold and never converted it to cash. OCD? Really? Ya think? 'Cause someone who was stealing for the value would have started converting it to cash long ago.  (May 3, 2009 | post #18)

Girl Fights Off Muggers With Marching Band Baton

There are three things that have been consistent themes in my life: music, martial arts and technology. I feel vindicated in a big way on at lest two counts.  (May 2, 2009 | post #162)

Well, the principal difference between a jo and a bo seems to be length. The short one is a jo, the long one is a bo. But the definitions of "short" and "long" seem to vary from school to school. For me, a jo is around 3'-4' long. Basically it should fit under your armpit. A bo is 5'-7' long. So, yeah, the baton would be more like jo.  (May 2, 2009 | post #151)

Some might, but they don't have much to support the argument, moral or legal. They attacked. She defended. She *stopped* when the threat was neutralized. Then she left. Anyone claiming she was in the wrong is just not paying attention.  (May 2, 2009 | post #147)

Well, I appreciate the sentiment, but I disagree. At some point it stops being self defense and starts being violent retribution. At some the law stops seeing it as self defense and starts seeing it as assault and battery. She stopped before she crossed that line. A Good Thing. That means that the muggers have *no* claim to anything remotely resembling the high ground. They attacked her, she defended herself and then removed herself from the situation. They screwed up, she didn't.  (May 2, 2009 | post #146)

Sure they were. It's all relative. She was just more able-bodied than they were.  (May 2, 2009 | post #145)
