'Birthers' fade after passage of law against them

The United States does not subscribe to birthright being from a mother or a father...were that the case, we wouldn't be debating the 14th Ammendment now. A baby of two Mexican parents born in the United States is an American Citizen. The country of Mexico may extend citizenship to that child...but the child is American nevertheless. As you may have heard over the past couple of weeks, the 14th Ammendment does not apply to those children born of foreign nationals who are here on official duty. A child born to one American parent and a foreign national is an American citizen. If the child is born in the USA, nothing more needs to be done. If the child is born overseas, the American parent must file for a certificate of birth abroad. Again, the child may also be considered a national of the other parent's country but that country's laws or customs does not negate the child's American citizenship. Nor does some lame statement by one of the parents. Only when the child becomes of age can he or she choose one nationality over the other.  (Aug 8, 2010 | post #20)

That doesn't apply to American citizens even if it were remotely true.  (Aug 8, 2010 | post #14)

Alex Rodriguez hits home run No. 600

It should be pointed-out that the writer, Ronald Blum, indicated that Rodriguez had "joined an elite club". He listed the members of the 600 club but failed to put an asterix next to the names of two other dopers Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa.  (Aug 7, 2010 | post #12)

Hunting for Quayles

Typical politics from both of the more prominent parties. And, once again...it would appear that the citizens are left trying to decide which is the least of two evils.  (Aug 7, 2010 | post #1)

Family fight Billy the Kid pardon

Richardson might be keeping a promise made by the former Territorial Governor, Brigadier General, Ambassador and Author and he might become more than a footnote in the history books...but he is by no means the caliber of man as Lew Wallace.  (Aug 7, 2010 | post #2)

How do you know that 20 million is not accurate? It isn't as if they check-in with the Bureau of the Census as they come into the country. Statistical sampling is not a very dependable method of determining illegal entry and if the Border Patrol could be counted on for better figures...then wouldn't they have rounded them up in the first place?  (Aug 6, 2010 | post #28)

Though I wouldn't have made the statement personally, it is by no means a "threat" . YOU don't get to determine whether or not the question was rhetorical. The question should be one that all of us have internalized at least once, "Why won't the President visit the region?" Why won't he spend a significant amount of time touring Bisbee/Naco, Douglas, Sierra Vista, Nogales, Columbus, NM...El Paso, Laredo and so on. This is an important enough issue that the extremists of both political parties need to realize that if we don't start to implement some kind of solution, the potential of violence on our side of the border will increase. Whether through a heightened sense of impunity on the part of the drug runners, or a total lack of faith in the in the government prompting vigilantism, or a combination of both, the violence WILL increase.  (Aug 6, 2010 | post #22)
