Former astronaut scoffs at global warming
The people living in bubbles are the ones who think that global climate change will only affect other people somewhere else or choose to remain ignorant of how melting glaciers and global poisoning are affecting people who make a subsistance living. Right now, we are told to limit the amount of fish we eat because of the mercury. People with asthma are told to stay indoors on days of heavy pollution. We just accept that more children are developing asthma and cancers. We quickly forget about Love Canal and Bhopal. They are like the frog in the slowly-warming pot. They want to see dramatic changes and refuse to look at the last fifty years of research shown in the Keeling curve. (Yesterday | post #912)
Believers like to inflate their own importance by conflating arguments against their beliefs or their attempts to impose their religious beliefs on others with a battle against their non-existent god (Yesterday | post #98119)
Yes, it's called biochemistry. And it's all we've got since religion offers only fairy stories. (Yesterday | post #98116)
Deut. 33[17] His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: 1Sam.2[10] The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth... Job 28[24] For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; Deut. 28[49] The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, (Yesterday | post #98113)
WILL SHARIA LAW WORK IN AMERICA? pros and cons
We certainly do not. Our law was based on English common law. There is little in our laws that resemble all those laws in the Bible. ledfarmor: besides arab and muzzies are a primitive and backwards species, should we allow for sharia law it wold be setting democracy back a few centuries and ain't nobody wants that. god knows their own women don't want that. dirty arab chimps, can't do nothing right. AY: You don't sound that informed yourself. You are using classic hate tactics that have been employed by all hate-mongers and authoritarians, generalizing about other people, calling them less than human. If you deny people their humanity, then the only solution is extermination just like the Nazis did. As I said, the orthodox jews have their own rabbinical courts right in the U.S.. They deal with family issues which are no more liberal than sharia law on marriage and divorce. Some version of sharia law may operate in the U.S.. since we already have the Jewish precedent. Lord Monckton's credentials as a science advisor have been questioned. "He has been described in some quarters as a "former science adviser to British prime minister Margaret Thatcher and a world-renowned scholar."[9] However, his credentials as a commentator on climate change have been questioned by some commentators. James Hoggan and Richard Littlemore note in their book Climate Cover-Up: The Crusade to Deny Global Warming that Monckton has "no training whatsoever in science", and criticize his asserted credentials as "unfounded self-promotion. "[10] The Daily Telegraph has described him as "a former economic adviser".[4][ wiki] He sounds like an old cold warrior in his March 2009 address, using childish name-calling instead of scientific evidence. http://www.heartla nd.org/full/24881/ Great_Is_Truth_and _Mighty_Above_All_ Things.html "...Monckton has referred to himself as a "peer of the House of Lords" but is not a member of that body.[5] Monckton was an unsuccessful candidate for a Conservative seat in the House of Lords in a March 2007 by-election caused by the death of Lord Mowbray and Stourton. He received no votes in the election.[6]" [wiki] "...Monckton is a member of the Worshipful Company of Broderers, an Officer of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, a Knight of Honour and Devotion of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and a member of the Roman Catholic Mass Media Commission... " Well, if he's a catholic, that would explain his rabid fear of "Reds". Writing in Salon, Alex Koppelman criticized Monckton's assertions about the conference's framework for negotiation as being "woefully inaccurate. And that's a nice way of putting it." [21][22] The St. Petersburg Times's PolitiFact.com described his assertions as "not only unsupported but preposterous" and awarded him a special rating of "britches on fire".[23] Ethan Baron of the Canadian newspaper The Province criticized Monckton's assertions as the product of a "whacked-out, far-right ideology, combined with an ego the size of the Antarctic ice sheet."[24][w iki] Sounds like all that inbreeding in the British aristocracy may be taking its toll on old Moncky. Your use of "altruistic " sounds like you are a fan of Ayn Rand. The fact is that eventually we will all be counting the amount of energy we consume or generating our own energy in part because we cannot continue to burn coal for most of our energy as we do today. And the nuclear industry still hasn't got the method of disposing of its waste down to a point where it is both safe and economical. How many people have to have asthma and other respiratory problems before we stop burning coal or find a way to keep the lead, mercury and other poisonous wastes out of the air? We are concerned about children eating lead-based paint, but we allow lead to be spewed into the atmosphere and onto the earth and the sea. Do you know the ocean is becoming more acid from fossil fuel pollution? Your so-called altruism is actually just plain old survival for us in the first world too. The earth is one ecosystem. What happens to one part of it affects us all. You can try to live in a bubble, but I don't think it will be very enjoyable. (Yesterday | post #908)

Is eternal punishment a contradiction of Gods love?
Hope:However you wish to perceive the word geena, the verses above are very clear that there will be separation of those who believe and those who do not. AY: The separation is in the verses about the sheep and the goats. Those verses 43-47 in Matt 9 are about hellfire. Hope:I cannot think Jesus is sending all sinners AY: Yes, I know you don't like these verses. Most xtians like to think of Bible Jesus as the Good Shepherd and the meek lamb going to the slaughter, preaching love and forgiveness. But there are these verses and the ones about the last judgment which xtians like to quote without seeing the obvious contradiction between the god of justice and mercy and the lake of fire they like to talk about. Is eternal punishment a contradiction of Gods love?
According to the Interlinear Bible, the word used was geennan which refers to Gehenna, a place of fire, originally where the trash was burned outside Jerusalem. Believers try to make the argument that since there was a place on earth called Gehenna, Jesus wasn't talking about a fiery place in the afterlife, an argument that makes no sense to me. Those believers don't want to face the sadism Bible Jesus refers to by saying its just symbolic. But it appears to be symbolic of the fiery torture after death that Bible Jesus obviously believed in. It's first century thinking or earlier and unworthy of an omniscient and all-merciful god. (Yesterday | post #14910)
Is eternal punishment a contradiction of Gods love?
We were discussing the threat of hell which cannot be characterized as any form of freedom. Believers like to say that humans have the freedom to choose between heaven and hell while ignoring my point which is that if they believe that their god will burn them in hell for their sins, they are worshipping a sadistic god and not the source of all love, justice and mercy. Hope: Actually, I am curious are you claiming the "devil made me do it" is the root of religion? Wouldn't that be contrary to most teachings? I will take the liberty of answering it-yes. AY: I presume you mean all xtian teachings. My point is that no matter how few times hellfire is quoted as coming directly from Jesus, the fact that he mentions it at all shows a belief on someone's part in a sadistic god that burns people. Do you think we should burn criminals as punishment? Hope: One last question who do you think is the enemy to Christians other than Satan? AY: Isn't that the same thing as saying, "The devil made me do it?" Your reference to Satan shows that your mind is in the first century or earlier since you still believe in evil spirits. And why do you? How does it enhance your religious beliefs? I think the belief in evil spirits shows a childish need to avoid responsibility for one's misdeeds. (Yesterday | post #14908)
