When I grew up in the north suburbs of Chicago in the 1960s and the 1970s, the state of Illinois was still a financial and industrial powerhouse. The Land of Lincoln had a low rate flat income tax, the property taxes were reasonable, the state ran budget surpluses, and Illinois was the home of such iconic mega-employers as Caterpillar, Sears Roebuck, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. An Illinois Lottery Quick Pick winning ticket for $250,000 was purchased at the Marathon at 8001 North Skokie Boulevard in Skokie. The winner in Saturday night's Lucky Day Lotto drawing matched all five numbers - 01 - 14 - 16 - 39 - 45 - to win the total. Comment?

A south suburban gas station sold a jackpot winning ticket for $6,250,000 for Thursday night's Lotto drawing, and the winner has yet to come forward. The winning Quick Pick ticket was sold at Torrence BP, 17002 Torrence Ave., and matched all six numbers: 07 - 14 - 17 - 30 - 38 - 44, according to a statement from the Illinois Lottery. Comment?

Years of playing Quick Pick tickets every day paid off for 70-year-old Jesus Davila Jr. in January when he won $265 million - the largest prize in Illinois Lottery history. "I'm a regular Joe and I played and I won it," said Davila, as he smiled at a news conference Tuesday in the Thompson Center downtown, where Illinois Lottery Director Michael Jones presented him with an oversized check. Illinois didn't have one of the jackpot-winning Powerball tickets, but state lottery officials say a $1 million winning ticket from the drawing was sold in eastern Illinois. The Illinois Lottery said Thursday morning that the Match 5 winning ticket was sold at Phillips 66 in the village of Westville. Comment?
