Referred to the Committee of the Whole by a 7-2 vote on March 14, the ordinance would have designated it to limit or deny employment opportunities, housing and public services to people on the basis of race, religion and a number of other criteria, including sexual orientation or gender identity. Supporters say those last two categories are unprotected by state and federal law, while opponents say the ordinance - which does not set forth a penalty but could make it easier to file a civil suit on the matters - is unnecessary or infringes upon religious freedom.
