At one time, the Kingsland meadowlands tract was to be the site for a giant development: a sprawling golf course, then luxury apartments and hotels, to be built by EnCap Golf Holdings. But EnCap went bust in 2008, leaving in its wake Lyndhurst, North Arlington and Rutherford with millions in debt - instead of dividends - resulting from public obligations linked to the project, endorsed by the then-New Jersey Meadowlands Commission. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority is expected to approve the sale Thursday of the largest tract of developable land in the Meadowlands - a sprawling, 718-acre parcel of remediated landfills known as the Kingsland plot that previously was the proposed site of the failed golf and housing project known as EnCap. Business officials say the property, which straddles the borders of Lyndhurst, Rutherford and North Arlington, would give the regional and state economies a much-needed boost once a private developer fills it, possibly with distribution centers, solar farms, data centers, hotels and recreational amenities.
