Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is spending $1 billion to make changes to how it pays and trains U.S. hourly workers as the embattled retailer tries to reshape the image that its stores offer dead-end jobs. As part of its biggest investment in worker training and pay ever, Wal-Mart told The Associated Press that within the next six months it will give raises to about 500,000 workers, or nearly 40 percent of its 1.3 million U.S. employees. Its only been a month since the Southeast Volusia Advertising Authority put up nine new highway billboards but members of the tourism board are already thinking about replacing one of them. Ad authority members at a meeting Tuesday expressed concerns whether the photo of sailboats in front of a sunset made the words "New Smyrna Beach" difficult to read. Comment?

Shok Idea Group, a New Smyrna Beach advertising agency, has merged with an Orlando area firm called Archipelago Inc. The combined company will be called Shok Idea Group, which will have offices at 434 Canal St. in downtown New Smyrna Beach as well as one in the Orlando area. Jonathan Lee, the founder of Archipelago will become a partner at Shok, along with Shok's founder Scott Disbennett. Comment?
