Health system giant UPMC is turning to its academic partner to evaluate the sensitivity of an internally developed thyroid cancer test, with the hope of broadening the test's market appeal while sparing patients unnecessary surgery. The two-year trial by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine involving 90 to 100 patients will determine whether UPMC's ThyroSeq screen can distinguish between strains of the disease, based on predictions of how fast it will spread.
