The U.S. government claims former Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship "ran a massive criminal conspiracy" at the Upper Big Branch Mine and all other Massey mines to skirt safety rules in the name of making money, but Blankenship's defense asserts there is absolutely no proof of any of the government's allegations. For a final time Tuesday, the jury heard from both sides on the three criminal charges against Blankenship, 65, who is on trial for allegedly leading a conspiracy to violate mandatory mine safety regulations prior to the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster and allegedly lying to shareholders and U.S. securities officials about those practices after the explosion.
