    This year, the Troopers look mighty talented and highly capable of earning a district title - something not done since 1994. "This senior group is really special, and it's more than just saying it's the skill guys on offense or skill guys on defense," said newly-hired Eastwood coach, Julio Lopez, who was previously offensive coordinator at Socorro.

    Class 6A predictions and superlatives

    Awatt, who ran for 1,850 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, was a first-team All-District selection for the Tigers, and will carry just as big a load this season. Jackson has verbally committed to Texas Tech and will be a force at defensive end after recording 74 tackles and six sacks last season as a junior.

    Sandies ready to storm the field

    Whatever lingering questions there might have been about Amarillo High's ability to return to the state's highest classification were answered in the affirmative last season. The Sandies didn't show any transition pains in 6A, as they won their first nine games and lost 26-21 to Frenship in the District 2-6A finale that decided the district championship.

    Editor's note: Summitt Hogue was a Texas Tech safety and linebacker from 2011-14. He walked on from Frenship, was placed on scholarship before the 2013 spring semester and lettered in the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
