    Veteran coaches to meet again

    No disrespect to Grant Haen, Alex Lange, Mark McGrath, Alec Van Volkenburg and the rest of the Lisle football team, but the highlight of Friday's game at Aurora Central Catholic may occur before kickoff. Renewing an on field relationship dating to the 1980s, Lisle coach Paul Parpet Sr. and ACC coach John Belskis will hug it out during the captain's handshake as they did when friendly rivals in the West Suburban Conference.

    DeKALB – The Kaneland boys cross country team finished as narrow runners-up to Belvidere North at Tuesday's Sycamore Invitational at Afton Forest Preserve. Powered by sophomore Matthew Richtman's fifth-place finish in 16:22, the Knights placed second among 14 teams with 73 points.

    Calm, collected Thorson ready to go for Northwestern

Reporters kept asking Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald why redshirt freshman Clayton Thorson won the three-way competition to start at quarterback.

    Impressive wins for Schaumburg, Conant

    Coach Hamid Mehreioskouei said before the match that his team from Schaumburg has been exemplary so far this season when it comes to combining good housekeeping with highly technical and entertaining boys soccer. A 1-0 victory over St. Charles East to begin the Northside College Showcase tourney is unlikely to change anybody's mind, as the Saxons improved to 3-0-0 following a first-round win in Northfield on Saturday.

    PLAINFIELD – The Geneva girls volleyball team has started off its season as strong as anyone after winning the Plainfield North Invite Saturday. The Vikings beat St. Charles North in the championship match .

    WW South wins in double OT

    Vong's 21-yard field goal in double overtime gave Wheaton Warrenville South a 10-7 lead over visiting Wheaton North in their DuPage Valley Conference season opener. On the ensuing possession, the Falcons -- pushed back 6 yards on second down -- came up short on a 32-yard field-goal attempt to end the game.

    Maybe it's not a big change

    Eyes on Five returns with a look at some of the stories affecting DuPage County football heading into the 2015 season. The addition of Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley gives the DuPage Valley Conference a bunch of firepower in its claim as the state's toughest football league.

    St. Charles East rallies late, beats Wheaton North

    It's tough to find a better atmosphere to watch girls volleyball than St. Charles East, and the Saints' home opener Tuesday had it all -- a big crowd, fans of both teams singing along to "Sweet Caroline," a tense 3-set match, and a comeback that sent the home side home happy. St. Charles East lost the first set to Wheaton North and trailed 21-17 late in the third.

    New league, same old results

    In his rookie season as coach after serving as Marist's offensive coordinator, Fitzgerald won the CCL Green's Lawless Award as coach of the year. After decades in the now-defunct Suburban Catholic and Suburban Christian conferences, St. Francis culminated a surprising CCL debut -- at least to those outside the Spartans football family -- with a 3-1 conference co-championship with Montini, which St. Francis beat 31-7.
