    Lynx intimidated by 'Cats, pay the price

    With a firm grasp on his ball club's demeanor, Webster City head baseball coach Mark Fisher knows the right buttons to push at the appropriate times. But there have also been times, like following Wednesday night's 14-3, 5-inning loss to North Central Conference rival Humboldt, that he has taken off the kid gloves.

    Seventh-inning rally falls one run short, WCHS softb...

    Sophomore pinch-hitter Amanda Hentges picked a pretty opportune time to leisurely stroll around the bases for the first time this season. Stepping to the plate for the first and only time in the bottom of the fifth inning, Hentges uncorked a grand slam that sent Algona on its way to a 9-8 North Central Conference victory over Webster City in what could be considered a mild upset Monday evening.

    Growing pains no more as Lynx win again

    The growth shown by the Webster City baseball team in recent weeks has been nothing short of stellar, and it only continued here Monday night. Ahead 4-0 at one point and then tied at 5 while on the wrong end of a bases loaded jam in the last half of the sixth inning, the Lynx dug deep and found a way to continue their winning ways by disposing of North Central Conference rival Algona, 7-5.

    While most of the state's prep teams said uncle to Mother Nature and took the night off on Wednesday, the Webster City softball team was on the field and looking to upset fourth-ranked and North Central Conference leader Fort Dodge St. Edmond at Lynx Field. Already with the ball in her glove, WCHS third baseman Maddie Anderson prepares to tag out a sliding Jacque Oberg of St. Edmond during the fourth inning Wednesday evening at Lynx Field.

    SE baseball team blanks Lynx

    Reid Johnson picked up his second win in as many nights, tossing a complete game five-hitter for the Gaels . Johnson struck out three and walked three, while Ryan Szalat, Robert Flattery, Logan Fear and Jason Setterdahl all drove in a run each.

    Nerland's HR assault continues in Lynx win

    As long as pitchers continue to challenge Webster City freshman slugger Cassidy Nerland, she'll continue to blast the softball into orbit. Nerland cranked her fourth home run in the last eight games - her seventh of the season - on Monday, as she powered Webster City to a convincing 6-1 victory over North Central Conference rival Hampton-Dumont.

    No. 4 Gaels get past Algona

    Lansman pitched a two-hitter, striking out six, as fourth-ranked St. Edmond claimed a 2-1 victory over Algona at Rogers Park. Along with her effort inside the circle, the Gael senior and Iowa Central recruit also hit the go-ahead home run in the sixth inning, and turned a game-ending double play.

    Lynx go 1-3, place 14th at FD Invite

    A 14th-place finish in the 16-team Fort Dodge Invitational wasn't exactly what the Webster City softball team had in mind when the tournament got underway from the Rogers Sports Complex on Friday, but the difficulty of the field had a lot to do with the Lynx 1-3 record. WCHS opened with a 5-3 loss to sixth-ranked Winterset on Friday and later dropped an 8-7 decision to Harlan.

    The explosive Webster City softball bats that were commonplace early in the season made their triumphant return to the diamond here Wednesday night. WCHS piled up five runs in the first inning and then added another five in the fourth to bookend a dominant effort in a 14-0, 4-inning rout of North Central Conference rival Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

    Coming off a season-defining 7-3 victory over second-ranked Clear Lake on Tuesday, the Webster City baseball team wanted to make sure it wasn't still in a celebratory mood when it stepped onto the diamond here Wednesday night. Sparked by a nine-run second inning and 13 hits from seven different players, the Lynx dismantled North Central Conference foe Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 12-2 in 5 innings, to increase their winning streak to three games.
