    Kiwi McDaniel finished a single shy of the cycle and drove in five runs while Korie Corral had four RBIs to power the Vanden High softball team to a 12-1 Solano County Athletic Conference win over Bethel, Thursday. McDaniel went 4 for 4 with a double, triple and two home runs with Corral going 3 for 4. Lauren Zabat, Celeste Flippen and Dariana Orme each had two hits, with Orme firing a one-hitter with nine strikeouts.

    Prep soccer: Champion Indians land six on All-MEL team

    Befitting a team that ran away with the Monticello Empire League championship, the Armijo High girls soccer team landed six players on the All-MEL team, which was selected on Thursday. Making the squad were senior forward Aly Bowers, senior outside defender Mikayla Elder, junior defender Emily Tabada, sophomore midfielder Jackie Elder, freshman outside midfielder Nadiah Martinez, and freshman center defender Abby Wolf.

    College notebook: Scholtens throwing smoke for Raiders

    The former Rodriguez High standout improved to 6-3 on the season by allowing five hits and two runs with four strikeouts and two walks in seven innings during a 19-2 drubbing of Youngstown State last week. Scholtens is second in the Horizon League with 54 strikeouts and a 2.69 earned run average, allowing 66 hits in 70 1-3 innings.

    The season got off to a rocky start for the Bethune-Cookman University softball team, losers of its first five games, 11 of its first 15 and 17 of its first 24. That all changed with the beginning of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on April 3 - and leadoff hitter Calesha Shelley going on an absolute tear. The Wildcats have gone 8-1 in MEAC with Shelley, an Armijo High graduate, batting .588 with 16 runs scored and 13 steals in as many attempts.
