    Lawrence Saenz took down the No.1 ranked 145 pound wrestler in California to highlight an exciting weekend at the Clinch Gear Battle for the Belt in Temecula Valley for Vacaville High School's wrestling team. Facing a 5-2 deficit late in the third period against Bernie Truax of Rancho Bueno Vista - the top ranked 145-pounder in the state, according to The California Wrestler - Saenz turned the tables and evened the match to force overtime.

    JJ Hill poured in 22 points and Quilani Stears added 14 to lift the Fairfield High girls basketball team to its first win of the season with a 56-48 Solano County Athletic Conference victory over Vallejo, Tuesday. "On the 50-50 balls they actually hustled, they played hard the whole game," Fairfield coach Goli Tavassoli said.

    The Rodriguez Mustangs' defense of last year's Monticello Empire League girls basketball title got off to a good start Friday as a stifling full-court press powered them to a 78-68 victory over the visiting Napa Indians. "It means a lot," Rodriguez coach Marcell Palmer said of opening the league slate with a win.

    Knights down Patriots 9-3 for 8th straight win

    Playing the part of host to the visiting Patriots, the undefeated Knights opened the game with five first half goals before adding an additional four goals in the second half. Buckingham forward JoJo Galvan registered another hat trick in the winning effort.

    The Will C. Wood Wildcats claimed a 54-18 win at Armijo in high school wrestling, closing out Wednesday's dual at E. Gary Vaughn Gymnasium by winning six consecutive matches. Wood improved to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Monticello Empire League, while Armijo fell to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in the MEL.

    Nilesh Sandhu dished out both assists Wednesday - one to Noah Ross in the 39th minute and one to Noah Bennett in the 42nd minute - as the Rodriguez Mustangs improved to 6-5-1 in prep boys soccer with a 2-1 decision over the Vallejo Redhawks. "They beat us 2-nil at our place , so it was nice to avenge that and get the win at their place," said Rodriguez coach Dale Daniel.

    The Buckingham Charter Knights picked up their first win of the boys prep basketball season with Wednesday's 42-35 decision over Cristo Rey and evened their Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League record at 1-1. Buckingham Charter didn't have anyone reach double figures in scoring, but Max Gibson and Jason Lewis both scored six and Cameron Gallagher and Michael Zughbaba added five each in the win.
