    Olive Branch edges Starkville for 6A crown

    As the clock moved inside three minutes remaining in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A State championship game, quite a battle was going on between two of the state's top players. Olive Branch's Myah Taylor and Starkville's Kelsey Jones were trying to power their teams to a title in their final high school games.

    When you have been to the state semifinals three years in a row, you have a sense anything can happen, which is why Starkville High School girls basketball coach Kristie Williams made sure to have several backup plans ready to show her players in practice to ensure they were prepared for everything against Biloxi on Wednesday. One of the "what-if scenarios" involved who would take over guarding Biloxi's BreBre Riley if Tabreea Gandy got into foul trouble.

    Starkville Academy soccer players earn all-star invites

    With a nickname like "Boom-stick," it's easy to understand why Cox's leg was a valuable asset to the school's football team and why Hamilton wanted Cox to re-join him and classmate Dalton Dempsey on the soccer field. But simply asking Cox to come out for the team wasn't going to be enough.

    Starkville improved to 30-0 with a 35-27 victory over Harrison Central Saturday night in the Class 6A quarterfinals at the Mississippi Coliseum. Starkville junior guard Jariyah Covington led all scorers with 18 points and grabbed four rebounds to help set up Wednesday's 1:30 p.m. match against Biloxi at the coliseum.
