    DHS boys reach NorCal net semis

    After capturing a Sac-Joaquin Section team championship, then an individual SJS doubles title - with one Davis High boys tennis duo beating another in the finals - the Blue Devils were ready to test themselves against the best competition Northern California had to offer. Though it was knocked out in the CIF NorCal Regional semifinals - in a match that was much closer than the final score indicated - DHS considers the test passed.

    CIF swimming: Northgate boys win state team champion...

    To say that East Bay athletes had a memorable experience at the inaugural California Interscholastic Federation state swimming and diving championships might be shortchanging the impressive results the region turned in Saturday. Forty-one swimmers or relay teams reached the medal stand at the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex, including four that finished first and five that placed second.

    It was Bay Area domination on the first day of the inaugural California Interscholastic Federation state swimming and diving championships Friday. In the 41 2 hours needed to complete preliminary heats on a gray and comfortable afternoon and early evening at the Clovis Olympic Swim Complex, swimmers from this newspaper's greater coverage area put 98 out of a possible 176 swimmers or relay teams into Saturday's finals, including 13 top seeds in the 22-event program.

    EBAL baseball: Monte Vista beats San Ramon Valley, i...

    Mustangs starting pitcher Noah Cort threw six innings of four-hit ball as the visiting Monte Vista High baseball team clinched a co-league title with a 5-1 victory over San Ramon Valley "It was big for us. We wanted this more than anything," said Cort, who allowed the game's first run, then retired 11 straight batters and 15 of the last 19 batters he faced.

    EBAL track: Carondelet, Amador Valley win team titles

    Christina Chenault certainly made an impact on the East Bay Athletic League track and field championships Saturday at Amador Valley High. The senior won three girls individual events, in which she set two meet records, and ran a leg on a meet record-setting 400 relay team as Carondelet won the girls championship meet team title with 114 points.

    Dougherty Valley's Kevin Ma wins NCS tennis title

    Dougherty Valley High boys tennis player Kevin Ma wanted to do something that his teammate did a year ago -- win a North Coast Section individual title. Ma did just that as he won the NCS Division I singles championship match 6-1, 6-3 over Rishab Sardana of James Logan at Chabot College.

    EBAL baseball: Monte Vista wins fourth straight

    The Monte Vista High baseball team won its fourth straight East Bay Athletic League game with a 3-0 shutout of host California on Friday. Monte Vista scored two runs in the top of the first, then its defense and pitching came up with big plays to keep the Grizzlies scoreless.

    NCS tennis: Top singles seeds move on

    The first day of the North Coast Section boys tennis Division I championships was a breeze for Dougherty Valley High sophomore Kevin Ma. The top-seeded Ma rolled in the first two rounds of the singles bracket with a pair of straight-set victories and a spot into Saturday's semifinals at Chabot College.

    Diablo Valley College swimmer Brandon James, a freshman, shattered a national community college record in the 200-yard backstroke on April 30, as he won the event 1 minute, 44.95 seconds at the CCCAA Swimming and Diving State Championships at East Los Angeles College. He broke a state record in the 100 backstroke .

    Around the Horn: Monte Vista earns EBAL baseball win...

    Ryan Marsh was 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and a run scored as the Monte Vista baseball team bested Foothill 6-1 on May 1 to stay firmly in the EBAL title chase. Junior right-hander Noah Cort went five strong innings to get the victory, striking out five and scattering four hits.
