    boys basketball team adapts, earns big win over Creek

    First-year Franklin boys basketball coach Tyler Podoll has been appreciative of the support and patience of the fans as he tries to rebuild the Saber program from the ground-up. A big reward for that patience came on Jan. 29, when the Sabers remembered the lessons from a December loss to rival Oak Creek and applied them with great vengeance, denying the favored Knights at every turn in a stunning 50-42 upset.

That's what the Oak Creek girls basketball team did against archrival Franklin Jan. 29 when the crafty Sabers abandoned their traditional zone with a strong man defense and stymied the three-time Southeast Conference champion Knights for much of the game.

    Local briefs: Bradford-Shoreland girls to play tonight

    In the only event on today's local sports calendar, the Bradford and Shoreland Lutheran girls basketball teams will meet in a non-conference game at 6 p.m. in Somers. Shoreland is coming off a 56-29 Metro Classic Conference victory at Racine St. Catherine's on Saturday night, its fourth win in the last five games.

    Another shot for Scott

    The teams will rematch at 6 tonight in a non-conference game at Early View . In the Bulldogs' 105-72 win, Scott scored 52 points, breaking the Feb. 24, 2000 County record of 51 set by Reuther's Karlos Hamilton against Union Grove Christian.

    The St. Joseph girls basketball team extended its winning streak to seven with a 68-39 Metro Classic Conference victory at Racine Prairie on Saturday night. Sidney Cooks led the first-place Lancers with 23 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.

    Bobby Brenner achieved a milestone in the Wilmot boys basketball team's 88-78 Southern Lakes Conference victory at Elkhorn on Friday night. With a team-high 30 points, Brenner went over the 1,000-point mark in only his 40th varsity game and helped the Panthers snap a five-game losing streak.

    Kaelber propels Hawks

    Madie Kaelber scored a season-high 39 points as the visiting Indian Trail girls basketball team downed Racine Case 79-75 in a Southeast Conference game on Friday night. Kaelber, who made four 3-pointers and went 13-of-14 from the free-throw line, went over the 1,500-point mark.

    The Oak Creek girls basketball team has been battering Southeast Conference opposition for about three weeks solid with little resistance, so it was good that Knights coach Steve Hluchnik scheduled a road trip on Jan. 23 to Kimberly for a little test. Which the Knights passed soundly, turning in a good defensive effort in a 51-40 decision over the Papermakers .

    Oak Creek wrestlers storm to another major meet title

    There was a solid number of established veterans around to lead the two-time Southeast Conference champion Oak Creek wrestling team this winter. However, veteran coach Matt Sommerville knew there were still enough holes in the lineup to potentially derail any plans of a third league title and a coveted berth in the WIAA state team tournament.
