    Jesuit vs. Central Catholic is the Game of the Week

    Was there ever suspense about the first Game of the Week this season? The Holy War between Jesuit and Central Catholic is arguably the biggest regular-season football game in Oregon high school football, certainly in 6A. And it's our Game of the Week in Week 1 of the 2015 season.

    Central Catholic at Jesuit , 7 p.m. Friday : The annual Catholic school showdown between the state's two Class 6A state title favorites. Last year's game was as good as it gets, when Central Catholic's Xavier Hallinan caught a 44-yard touchdown pass with 14 seconds remaining to give the Rams a 24-17 win.

    The Portland Interscholastic League volleyball season got underway Thursday - in jamboree form at Cleveland High - with three of the likely contenders taking turns beating up on each other. In between, all three teams defeated Franklin, with Cleveland and Lincoln winning 25-12 and Grant downing the Quakers 25-10.

    Here is a look at Liberty's 2015 schedule as the Falcons attempt to repeat last year's co-Northwest Oregon Conference championship: No doubt the Falcons will be looking for revenge here, as this was their only regular season loss last season. Liberty was stopped inside the 10-yard line during the final minute as it was driving for the tying score.

    Players to watch: The Crusaders return seven players who earned all-league honors last season, led by senior Jordan Happle, who was a first-team pick at receiver and defensive back and won the Metro's Defensive Player of the Year award. Also back are fullback Kyle Hamper, linebacker Mike Petroff and defensive back Zach Houlemard, who also were first-team picks; offensive lineman Griffen Marler and linebacker Geremiah Maxie, who were second-team selections; and running back Jason Talley, a third-team pick who rushed for 1,234 yards and 16 touchdowns while splitting time with then-senior Chase Morrison.

    Roughriders reload for run at PIL football title

    The Roosevelt Roughriders never really went away, of course, but they could be back as a football force in 2015. In 2013, Roosevelt went 6-0 against its city rivals and won the Portland Interscholastic League Class 5A title.

    The Saxons were a surprise last year when they won the Greater Valley, beating favorite West Salem 35-34 in a thriller, and with all-conference quarterback Gabe Matthews returning, they enter the season as the team to beat. Matthews will need to find a new top target, though, with the graduation of Connor Fohn.
